Texas

I have never seen either wheat or barley in the fields down here just the Sorghum which I think is the same thing as milo/millet. No clue on that one unless you can find a homebrew supply store as those are major beer making grains. Yes I used to make my own beer.

I am going to see what Loop farms has. I know they have corn, bird feed and scratch...I want to grow fodder and I don't want to pay $90.00 for a bag of grain. Nutz. Thanks on hay. I hope I can get some at Loop today when I'm out there. One shot, one kill :)

When i decide to do fodder I just use HEB Lentils or other beans those I guess are expensive at 99cents per pound, but sometimes the bean isle goes on sale. The milo from my bird seed seems to sprout just fine when the birds get sick of it and the local feed store in San Benito off of St(r)enger for me sells 50# for like 12.50 last time I got that. They can probably order it in for you if you are set on wheat and barley. I suspect you would need to do a brief face to face with the big guy who runs the place.

Just starting out on the bachelor pad, whoever built this thing was not a structuraly common sensical person. Right now I am working on reinforcing what is to become the doorframe, so far I have dropped in around 15 3 1/2" screws, 5 or so 2 inchers, and cut a piece of 2x4 down to size to close a gap that would be impossible to hardware cloth over. I was under the impression I would only be building a 2 foot door but it turns out I am building a 4' wide door so had to go buy 3 pieces of 2x4x8's for the project, and some heavy duty hinges after reviewing the hinges I have on hand. So I am out 22 bucks for hardware on the project just to build a door for the 5x8 section the sumatra have been excluded from for years. Later today I'll take the wrangler out on a hay run so I can top dress my coops. Oh yeah the float valve on the waterer for the run is rusted open and overflows, but it still works fine as I only have to turn the water on to fill and flush it.

Work stoppage as a 6 month old siamese cat just wandered on to the property hungry now we are off to scan him. Door frame is reinforced with 3.5 and 6" screws where appropriate. The little 2" washer headed screws are for the doors hardware cloth and hurricane shutters.

Just have to cut the hardware cloth to fit and mount the cloth plus the door and temporary hasping lock. The lumber is still wet so needs time to cure before painting as it is pressure treated. I'm thinking the door is going to become barn red as I have a half gallon of that on hand. This will be where the extra cockerels sleep tonight.

Ok one last little bit to go then an easy day tomorrow hanging the gate tomorrow. It king of sucks using 3 foot hardware cloth on a 4ft door I had to get the tools back out to cut one last piece of lumber for a crossmember, then the screws and all that yada yada I had already repacked. I thought I had 4ft cloth plus I am at the end of the roll that is always fun, but haven't used gloves or caused bodily injury to myself so that is a big plus.

LATE Edit: Finally got the work site cleaned up and everything back in its places in our sheds. The door is ready to hang in the AM and tomorrow our jerkiest cockerel will have a new home and the culls will as well.

The Cat to my eyes a very well cared for 6 month old Siamese female not microchipped. Due to the local cultural customs here in the Valley I rate it a "1st of the month country dump" and knowing DW we are getting a third cat. We have posted to the local lost and found pages I do not expect any measure of success as it arrived very hungry.

Busy Busy. Funny I had a new cat show up around our place yesterday. All back with a white tip on the tail. Our neighbors on both sides feed the stray's so my property is the cat highway going between them. I don't care as long as they earn their keep and eat the mice.

I threw together a fodder growing system yesterday with some scrap lumber I had and some dollar store bins. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Started soaking some seeds I had on hand. 1 lb of wild bird seed and 1 lb of quinoa (however you spell that nasty stuff).

:thumbsup Sounds perfect!

So I know 3 cockerels who are in for a rude surprise tonight! Only $22- unless you count the half a bale of hay I used to top off all of the coops. That makes it a plus $2.50/3 coops. I am considering adding a painted blue board to the top of the door as the lady who built this said she worked at the University, but was unfamiliar with the 90 degree angle concept so I am guessing not an educator.

Had 2 oaks cut out of the back yard. :( Oak root rot is getting all of them in the neighborhood.
Tree climber brought me a loquat tree (for a small fee). :D

Anyone tried loquat? The ones at the zoo are nice.

So the boys aren't happy and the pullets are a bit confused losing all the fast maturing CochinXSilkie cockerels, but I need that back pen mowed so the bachelors need to get to work on that run. Right now 2.5 hours after sunrise they are still hoping I will open that door for them and that ain't gunna happen.
