Texas

What area are you in? Im near the coast in Corpus and our ranch is in George West about an hour from Corpus. The weather is sometimes better in one place or the other.
Laureles, TX 5 miles north of Los Fresnos. I just knocked off lawn mowing time. I am working on reclaiming my yard with just a 21 inch push mower grasses are about 3-6ft high in spots. I am done until evening on that project though. It should be more pleasant around 6pm when the humidity has dropped. Weather channel put my arrow in the wrong spot.

EDIT- @electrycmonk @RUNuts I woke up to 7 still living blue Sumatra chicks so hoping the coop changes and night light did the trick.

I pulled the one developing egg from the broody last week and have her in a quail coop getting big. Standing like a cockerel already. Hmm.

The 13 remaining eggs set under the same broody aren't having any better luck. It appears 3 chicks pipped and got stomped, 1 hatched and is a cute little bugger, 2 more were pipped and I'm hopeful and waiting on the rest. The dead chicks a bummer.

Glad you are having better luck! We shall see what after work holds.

Where did you get the eggs, are they anything special?

So progress report on the 7 blue Sumatra chicks. I knew this would happen but I didn't expect it to go so fast, but their legs are darkening up fast with sunlight. Yesterday their gams were all yellow and today around 1:30pm(pics below) plus the beaks should be the next to darken.

2 buddies who have roosters with their laying hens. Barnyard surprises again. Nothing special at all and were free for the asking. I owe one buddy a cockerel.

One day, I will figure out what I want, like you, and then I will know the direction. In the meantime, I'm just playing with chickens. Naked necks aren't readily available and a broody didn't give me any warning. So I scrounged eggs.

Unfortunately, the Chicken Rancher Barnyard Surprises from last year are having reproductive issues at 1 year old. I've culled 2 of them with lash eggs or reproductive issues. Guessing these were from the production blacks that he has. Only a guess. His flock is mostly hatchery birds.

Oh ok your in the valley :) I love to go to the valley and eat the good Mexican food!

Gotta love finding a broody when you mow the lawn :( She pretty much lost a wing and all feathers to it and has an easy to fix blue coat patch on the rump. Have the bleeding controlled now, severe lacerations at the top wing joint at the body, chest cavity looks intact. Bleeding Heart wouldn't let me euthanize and wants to see how she does over night. I did my best nursey thing with liberal application of blue coat and some non stick guaze directly over that severe wound after flushing wounds and foreign debris. I probably should have amputated it since that shoulder joint is sliced half through, and might still do that in the morning as she has a break at the last wing joint too. Both wings are immobilized at present and she is in isolation. This is the kind of stuff that can only happen to a Silkie. My other fowl wouldn't wait for the mower nor would they fit under one.

Omg that's terrible! Poor thing I hope she can survive the injuries 😞 I don't know what I would do in this situation. I would be panicked that's for sure. Please keep us informed on her progress.

Best wishes Allen.

My broody is breaking the eggs as they pip. Have 3 live chicks and 5 fully formed dead ones. Today is 48 hours for the last 5 eggs. We shall see. Pulling the dead as I find them.

So with Solo, the survivor from the first set she sat, if these 3 survive, we will have 4 additions. I try not to count the hatchlings until after the first week. Hatching is very traumatic.

@RUNuts My theory is that they probably were already dead and distressed. Broody knew something was wrong and was investigating. Or you just need a silkie hen, one only not more. I still have a full broody jail and three more brooding nests without eggs in the coop.

Lawnmower Lame "Pumpkin" survived the night but I am waiting until I am prepared for that dressing change. I know I will most likely need to simplify that wound. She picked at cucumber this morning and knocked over her water so assume she tried drinking.

DW was a nurse as well but never dealt with polytrauma cases. So we will put her in charge of the chicken grief counseling. :gig
