We have a landfill here in Guadalupe county. It was highly protested...I even spoke at a community hearing. All the TCEQ players were there and I knew them all, including the attorneys. This landfill is right over the Wilcox aquifer, where the landfill was proposed, it's only about 25' below the surface! It made no difference to the authorities, they approved the site! Money talks, BS walks! So much for 'protecting the environment' or the citizens of the State.

We lived real close to plenty of frack sites never noticed a single issue but if you look at how their budget has been shrunk since then you would expect the agency to up the fines they get reported to offset those losses. Its budget is way less than half now and poisoning rural folks in your neck of the woods with the Eagle Ford play. You should join Sierra club or some other environmental coalition and donate to getting them sued. Cheaper to fix things than defend lawsuits to get em into compliance.

Most of the donation monies go to paying Administrative salaries and defending lawsuits...very little actually goes to the protection of the environment or to the welfare of wildlife.

Yep you have to do your due diligence when researching your 501c3's. All that information should be publicly available and we choose em like that after seeing how litigious they are after they make the news cycle for filing suits against offenders.

You lucky north and central Texans! Getting a cool front in August/September I'm jealous. Was not too envious about the 4-5am wakeup thunderstorms the DFW area got though......Chin up though many of us get a small break from the heat soon. :D

Wow I just looked at current temps there and don't think we will see those for lows for the next 2-3 months down here, we are already at 88F with 82.5 as the nighttime low.

We have a Mississippi Kite screaming & hunting the trees in the neighborhood. Leaving the chickens alone but I did see a couple of swoops. Pretty birds.
My coop & run are partially under trees with half barrel planters & wire to keep chickens out.

interesting to watch a family group of 5 Kites talk back n forth.
 
We (east Texas) are still under a heat advisory. Our humidity is extremely high this weekend.
I'm truly looking forward to some cooler weather, although I don't look forward to hawk season. We have quite a few of these guys hanging around. I think they may be Mississippi Kites. They watch the chickens but don't dive bomb them.

Probably only chicks under 4 weeks are at threat. At least our latest unplanned hatchout was well timed for hawk season which begins at the end of October? The kites just come after the sparrows and elicit a chicken threat call. Pretty amazing watching them chase the sparrows through the tree branches though. I know my grey matter doesn't process information that fast.

I have six 3 week old chicks right now but the mama hen is very diligent. So far, no problems. I'm picking up 17 from ideal hatchery in two weeks (just in time for the hawks) but I'll keep them in the outdoor brooder for four to five weeks before letting them roam with the flock. The area they roam in is for my "gentler" flock and has plenty of cover.
I've resolved to not cry over loosing a few to nature this year. It is quality of life vs length. I'm sure mine are happier grazing in the yards and pastures than locked in the runs for hours on end. I may have to rethink my position on that after adding fall chicks without a mother hen. I lost one of my favorites in January a couple of years ago to a hawk. She was just 24 weeks old and not especially intelligent. I'm always getting attached to the underdogs. I'm getting an assortment of standard pullets and also a couple of crevecoeur and some silkies so I may have to get in touch with your barber. 😉
