I truly believe domestic dogs are the top predator of chickens. I'm sorry you had to deal them. I had e tire flock destroyed by a dog. Then got blasted/blackmailed on here for stating I was gonna shoot it. I didn't, a neighbor did, after the dog chased his horses several times, last time thru a barb wire fence.
That was a mistake for the dog. Good luck with your new babies, let us know when they arrive...

We have a forecast of that white stuff Friday night… and Ummm, (coughs) “freezing” is actually a dozen degrees below that number you posted dude!

Thank you, yes we also have horses, and the dog got them all stirred up. I think that may be why my husband had to scare it off with a few shots in the ground versus at the dog. Didn’t want to aim at the dog with the horses anywhere close.
We free range the chickens, and I am aware of the occasional loss of chicken due to them free ranging, however this just pisses me off when these darn dogs run loose.
we have 2 aussies that are great with the chickens, they often just sit out there with them and hang out. Unfortunately they were inside at that time.
anyway if that dog does come back it will be the last time For sure!

I'm located in Harper, about 30 miles west of Fredricksburg. I have 14 Easter Eggers in full production, 16 goats, 2 pyrenees, 2 blue heelers, 2 adopted cats, and one very special miniature dachshund. Oh, and 1 husband.

Hope everyone has made it through this winter storm unscathed! Spring will be here before long!
I don’t even know what types of chickens I want. But foe sure I’ll want a couple Easter Eggers. I love the colored eggs. Who lays speckled egg?

All chickens are great. I think there is too much focus on breeds. If you get a mixed flock, they will all lay brown in 3 generations.

I prefer free chickens. I get hatching eggs from the neighbors flock and these girls are great.

Quail lay speckled eggs, but totally different housing and care. Not really familiar with speckled chicken eggs. Guinea eggs are very pretty.
