I feel certain I've mentioned it before, but to anyone interested, there will be a poultry and livestock trades day in Gilmer, TX, on April 8th.

But it's a 6hr drive for me and I'm not ready to bring home anything new! Need to wail till I have all my pens done.

You should. Vendors are driving 8+ hours with trailers from West Texas to bring birds. So it's well worth it. There are some vendors I'm not a fan of, but I think the majority of the people there are quite nice.

I'm going to have to think on it. It's right after payday and I really need to get equipment for the coops/pens I'm building. Waters / feeders....really need to see the chickens.....

Do you ever worry about "catching something" ?
I just hate the whole quarantine thing. Changing clothes and shoes, and being so careful, reminds me working with MRSA and EColi patients. I'm done with all that...unless a gorgeous rooster comes along.

Wow. He is big!
I had an English orpington blue mixed with Ameraucana that got to 12 lbs. No one believed that until they saw him in person.
He was so sweet natured.(unless you were another rooster) A little butterball. He died last summer and it broke my heart to lose him. Here he is with a couple of brahma ladies.

To be there, everyone has to be PT Tested and TAHC Certified. I make it a habit of not bringing any of my own birds back home, so at the end of the day, I'll make a deal on anything left over. If I bring other birds home, I only bring them home from trusted breeders. If I need to quarantine, I will, but I usually do not. I also try to only bring chicks and hatching eggs. Those sell easier for me and are easier to transport. The only issue I've ever had at an event was in Ellis County. They didn't water the dirt floor, and it was incredibly dusty. I looked like an extra off the set of The Mummy. A lot of the customers reported upper respiratory infections from the dust.

It's crazy how big they get. Did you lose him to the heat over the summer? That was brutal on my Orps last year.

If I go, I know I'd bring home birds! I see some pretty irresistible chickens listed.
I've been thinking of building a duck house too. I'm a little afraid hawks would pick them off, though. And, We have so much water, that I'd probably have a hard time getting them in at night.

What a handsome guy! I'm sorry about your loss! I didn't think he was that big but my hubby got a wild hair one day and came walking out of the house with my digital scale from our bathroom and weighed himself, I said wth are you doing, he replied with I'm curious...whatever...and went about my garden revamp. Next thing I hear the ladies having a fit, look up and my hubby has Klaus cornered and picked him up (he never messes with the chickens) again, wth are you doing, I got the same response as he walked to the scale again...men

I did. Special circumstances though. He had broken his beak, fighting through a fence with another rooster.
I was hand feeding and watering him. I kept him inside for a long time, but he was getting so depressed. 2nd day outside, I was sitting and talking to him. He was in my lap and he had a seizure and died.
His son is the big half brahma that I have with my big flock now. He is better tempered with the other roosters.
