Texas

Had a yellow bellied water snake on the back porch eating toads. Out of bed, at dark, me in shorts and sandals and water snake looked like a Moccasin. After it coiled and struck at the dogs, dead snake. Stupid dogs. But they were protecting us. Glad we didn't have to run to vet for antivenom. I usually take the water snakes back to the water when they come up in the yard, if I'm not half asleep, bleary eyed with a dog trying to protect me.

That and I've got chicks on the ground. Glad the cat will be fine. Now to see where the snake is or if it was passing through.
I will move the snakes when possible, but if I have to, I don't too much mind killing one. I'd rather have snakes than rats though.
Thank God we have cats around. Our first few years out here, we were overrun with moccasins, rat snakes, rattlers, and copperhead all. We don't see them as often now, so I guess our cat and the neighbors' cats have helped.

Not gonna look for snake. Before bite, Bubba was by the tank, before that I saw him headed for the abandoned church, in my front yard. As long as snakes leave chickens alone, and not in my direct living space, I leave em alone.

ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR!
stay watchful.

Well I been busy. Monday night let cats in. I have them mostly trained. Call, they come; I let them in, reward them with can catfood. So they usually are right by food bowl. Monday, no Bubba by bowl. He has hidden in the closet. I pick him up, he growls, UT oh! Huge swelling right side of face, mouth. Took collar off(scared he was gonna choke). Off to vet we go.
Snakebit, vet seems to think bite went thru cheek, and venom injected in mouth 😳.
Pain meds, antibiotics. He slept all day yesterday, swellings down, I think he'll be ok
I hope he does well. Our Wally was bitten by rattlesnake. Came in, couldn't walk on front leg. Husband knew directly what is was. Went to vet, treated with fluids for shock, iv antibiotics, hospital one day. Survived. Vet thought they would need to graft her skin, but healed up nicely, no grafting needed.

He's the tabby. Patti is the black long hair

Im pretty sure it's colder here than that 50 on my weather app. I'm out, with a sweatshirt and jeans, but a coat might be more appropriate. 🥶
Long sleepless nite. Thunder, lightning the whole shebang. I have 2 rain gauges, I poured 2 1/4 inches from one and 2 inches from the other. Flood watch and heavy rain today, tonite, and tomorrow morning. Temp 45⁰ here. Weather app says 50⁰.Nope I'm not going out
