Its my chickens first 100 degree day today. I'm going to set them up a little water pool with bricks to stay cool. Any other hot weather tips to try? I'm a nervous momma and know SATX is going to be hot this year. They do have lots of shade but usually prefer to stay out of it.

Shade and water.

I make sure they have shade and water. Underneath the shaded areas I spray it down with water to keep it cooler.

My chickens did just fine last summer. We (the humans) ate more watermelon last summer, and we cut up all the rinds into smaller chunks and would provide them after being refrigerated or frozen. They loved them. Otherwise provided plentiful access to drinking water and they just minded their own business, took a lot of dirt baths and whatnot, and kept on carrying on.
They're a lot tougher than we are. If they have shade and they aren't using it, they're probably fine. They'll seek it out when they need it.

I have a hen, Percy, who I would like to rehome. I am no longer able to
take care of her, so I would like to find another person and flock for
her to be with. That or I would like to give her up to a chicken
or other animal rescue, or other sort of place, nearby. I tried to rehome
her last year, but to make a long story short, life became hard, and
I was unable to. Now I am ready to try again. She is a pet to
me, so I do not want her to be butchered or kept as livestock. I live in
the Austin tx area. Does anybody know or have experience with farm
rescues, chicken sanctuaries, or other pet sanctuaries around austin? She
is almost 5 years old.

I have been looking on the internet at different chicken, farm, and animal
rescues and sanctuaries around me, and I found several different places.
Does anyone know anything about these locations or have any experience
with them?

I don't know anything about those rescues, but I wish you the best of luck rehoming her!

Haven't been here in awhile!...I have extremely sad news, as of Monday, I lost my dog, Gracie, to what I think was a cougar! I was feeding and watering my birds before going to work, it was 4:20am. She barked twice, then let out a blood curdling scream or yelp for about 3 seconds, then silence! I don't think it was a coyote cause she was taken to be fed to whatever it was cubs or pups. Coyotes will kill a dog but usually don't eat that kill. She only weighed about 6lbs...not as big as a jack rabbit.:hit

There have been more sightings of cougars in the San Antonio area in recent months and especially up into the hill counrty. Just everyone watch your small animals when they are outdoors!

I'm so sorry! How devastating! I will say that when I lived in AZ, cats and dogs (under 10 lbs usually) would be grabbed by coyotes. The coyotes would climb the fences and grab the dog and run with it to evade any humans. So it's possible... but I also know when I lived in South Texas that AZ coyotes are typically bigger and healthier than South TX coyotes. Not that I think coyote predators are any better than cougars. That's scary either way!
