[Miss Red]

Does anyone, by any chance, want some five month old roosters? I have one light sussex boy left, several "reds" (mainly production, one RIR left), two buff orps, and two SLW. Free to a BYC home. They'll be going in the freezer next week, very BIG boys. 8 lbs or better, they all are. They've been dressing out at a 5lb average. My freezer is full and the lady that was going to buy the extras from me no longer wants them, so they're terrorizing my hens. Too many roosters. Giving them til wednesday, then whoever is left will be in my freezer.

Also, I have a white ear lobed black hen... I believe she's laying brown eggs? Not sure. She's straight combed. She and my white leghorn pullet are best pals... Any clue what she is? She and the leghorn plus a PR hen lay in my feed room, I'm getting two brown eggs and a white egg daily from them. Not sure which is hers. But I only have one white egger, my leghorn, so it's got to be some brown egg laying breed. Got her in a trade for a EE pullet.

Regarding Beaumont:
The only specific info on the Beaumont show I saw (entry) came from the Bluebonnet Classic. That piece of paper says the deadline was the first Thursday in February. I was looking for a specific show date. Never found that and there's nothing on that website for poultry. It says "Poultry Information" but there's no link like for the other livestock. I think I remember calling one day last month but didn't get an answer and never got back to it. Anyone had any better luck?

It was the first Thursday in February But they take late entry so you still have time to get it in ,

There are more than a few peoplpe from "North of Here" that really don't understand the challenge that this roller coaster weather has. I grew up in Upstate NY. We had 4 seasons, even if spring or autumn was short some years. It got cold and stayed cold. You could plan on it and for it. Here, our biggest enemy is is the summer heat. My geese are cold-weather birds, but these extremes of temperature are hard even on them. I really feel for you folks that have chickens and especially those of you who have lost birds. I am hoping to show some of the geese next month, but these temperature extremes and the required heat lamps for pumps and pipes are really messing with their condition. Hope we're finally out of the woods!

Beaumont show date is March 26th judging starts at 9:00 they open at 6:00 that morning

Was there an extra fee for late entry? I'm not seeing it in the entry form, but it may be staring me in the face. (I hate that!) We've been trying to decide which shows we should go to. There's one in Pine Bluff, AR the week before. I'm pretty sure we'd have some breed competition at that one, so we were leaning that way. They're both about the same distance for us and about at the farthest limitation since we don't have anyone here to look after our stock. It's also the same judge we had at Bluebonnet. La Grange and Pine Bluff have judges we haven't had before, so their different perspectives would be helpful to us. We had a really good one at Bluebonnet, though, and it's very tempting. He was really easy to talk to and answered a lot of questions we had!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I sure am glad this is supposed to be the last night of bitter cold we have in the Fort Worth area!

I got to go to the Bluebonnet show at College Station last month. Never been to a poultry show before. It was really neat to see the different breeds upclose. There were some lovely birds there. The Langshan roosters were huge and impressive. Loved how the sizes of all the chickens varied from the largest to the pocket size.

Thought the call ducks were absolutely adorable.
I went as an observer just to see what it was like.

So sorry to hear about your feather-babies. I lost one of my girls, Ashes, on Jan 4 and it makes me so sad to think about it.
On a lighter note, I am really glad to hear that other people's silkies are on the dumber side... I was starting to think I just pick out birds that a just not so smart.

I think I am going to go to the LaGrange show ... I just love looking at all the different birds... I am not allowed to have any more chickens

but I think of it as window shopping. Like going to Tiffany's -- I know I can't have anything there but it is so fun to look and sometimes they even let me try things on!
