Hi y'all! Finally registered yesterday after lurking for about 5 months in anticipation of getting a few hens. I've learned so much from all the information on this site, which is incredible I might add! But, I'm sure I'll have questions as I begin this new venture.
Hubby and I just retired from our jobs in Houston and relocated to Kingsland, which is about an hours drive NW of Austin. We started building our humble retirement home 5 years ago during our every other weekend trip to the hill country and we are finally enjoying the fruits of all the blood, sweat and tears over those five years and we love it!! We only have 1/2 an acre but it sure beats what we had in Houston with neighbors within 15-20' of our house there.
We just completed converting my garden "hut" into a small chicken coop. The hut used to house my garden tools, etc. but it is now the future home for about 4 hens that we will be getting in a few weeks, after a trip to PA to attend a family reunion. We also made a nice enclosed run area for the girls. Sadly, the run doesn't have any vegetation since everything here is dead due to the drought, but I'm sure they will be happier out in the run then cooped up in the coop!
The day after we finished the run, we awoke to mishap that a deer had with the run. Apparently a spooked deer wasn't used to the run being there and collided with the fence. He bent an 8' T-post 90 degrees and of course mangled the attached chicken wire fencing too. I'm sure he must have hurt himself
after the collision, but since we didn't see any buzzards flying about (at least no more than usual) he must have survived. We have repaired the damage and then hung a bunch of old CD's from the fencing with fishing line so that the deer will know the fence is there as they come by during the night.
We plan on getting our hens from mobilechickencoops.com which is in the Burnet area. I think I'm getting a couple barred rocks and a couple other breeds but I haven't decided which ones yet. I'm looking for the best hens for large brown eggs, good disposition and that can tolerate the Texas heat and the type of winter that we had here last year, which was quite cold by Texas standards. I'd love to hear some suggestions from fellow Texans!!
OK, off to get some outside work done before it's 110 degrees again!
