My fan died a couple days ago .. have to go buy another. I've been opting to let them out the free range -- unattended, all day -- rather than have them cook slowly in the coop. They hang out around the shade of the house or under the rabbits.. but I'm risking predators. Ugh. What do ya do? I REFUSE to leave them locked up in this heat .. even with the fan.. and we live under tree cover!

I let most of my flock free range, they have high places to get away from any stray animals that come along..
But I let all my breeders out about 6 or 7 weeks ago, it just got too hot to leave them penned IMO.

And it rained here yesterday evening, wicked wind which I enjoyed. But it didn't last long, 30 minutes tops.
But it is dark and thundering this morning so maybe

<-- this is what I looked like dancing in the parking lot ....... There was water running accross the parking lot, and down the road, and in the ditches. When I got to Montgomery, the power was out at Wal-mart and they had closed. It was BLACK outside. By the time I got home .............. not a freakin' drop of rain...

It was sprinkling pretty good when I left the house this morning .. but looks like it rained in Conroe all night.

Not to be an Eeyore or anything, but it should add some humidity to our forcasted 105-107 degree temps this weekend...

Why not just give them Gatorade? Too much salt will dehydrate. I give the girls a 9 x 7 backing dish of ice water twice a day. I might add gatorade that is a good idea thanks.

I am so sorry for your loss. God bless their little chicken hearts. Keeping you and your other babies in our prayers. Along with all of the other feathered babies in BYC

The yellow powdered vitamins and electrolytes avaliable at most feed stores and TSC are basically "Gatorade". The brand is "Durvet". Much cheaper, water soluble powder. I use it regularly.

Mrs Fluffy, so sorry for your loss. Well finally we are getting rain, and lots of it. My chickens, instead of getting out of the rain are out n their run enjoying the cooler weather.

Sorry to hear about your chickens Aspen! I know you really love your birds. This heat is getting to everyone and the sad part is it doesn't look like it's going to give any time soon. We've been trying to plan a trip that way to go fishing but it's just to dang hot for anything.
