Thanks everyone for your kind words at least you all understand that it is sad to lose a hen, they are pets, part of the family, not just egg layers.

No no other symptoms other then nesting and breathing heavy and not even heavy just like she was hot breathing. The others seem fine eating and drinking fine too. I hope the others are fine I would be really really heart broken if anything else happens.

oh, that is so sad. It is so hard
Sometimes, it is impossible to know what happens to chickens. They hide their symptoms until it is almost too late.
Did she have any other symptoms other than breathing heavily and sitting in her nesting box?

Yes, sorry about your chicken! We lost one too, yesterday, and I couldn't tell why

. No trauma, no bad poop, no moping, no hunger strike. I thought everyone was acting very normal. Of course, it was our friendly chicken that we lost. My kids did a good job with handling the disappointment of losing the best one.
We're just 3 weeks into having them.
I was just logging on to see if I could find out why young chickens die "for no apparent reason" when I saw your post. If I find anything, I'll pass it on. Hope you feel better.

Thanks Veena

Im not sure of any shows in San Antonio except for Fancy Feathers which is in New Braunfels.

I think there are a few more shows in the fall. I believe there will be one in Decatur, possibly one in Abilene, one in La Grange, and one at the state fair in Dallas.
This website shows all the shows in Texas Brazos Valley Poultry Club

My bow legged, pigeon toed, mule headed, insane in the membrane mustang is SO CLOSE I can feel it.

I just can't wait to wrap my arms around her tomorrow, and after a few days of rest go on a well needed ride!!! I think she looks good considering she's already gone 1/4 of the way across the country for only the second time in her life!

orumpoultry,
I can understand how excited you are!!! I too am looking forward to you'lls reunion. You'll will have a well deserved "hug fest", full of nickers and nuzzles.
This waiting time is probably even harder than waiting for bitties to hatch.
Please keep us posted.
(((hugs))) to a fellow horse lover.
I was bitten by the 'horse bug' when I was about 3 yrs old. I didn't play with dolls as a child.....I played with my model (plastic & glass) horses. LOL

Hi all, new to Backyard Chickens. My family & I are in Pearland, a suburb of Houston. We have 13, 5 week old pullets, a mixture of RIR, Cornish, Buff Orpingtons, Dominique, and an unknown Bantam my son had to have! We also recently took in an Easter present gone wrong orphan that is about 1 1/2 weeks old. Not sure yet what she is but thinking she is RIR. We are new to chickens so be prepared for lots of questions!
