Texas

Happy Tuesday everyone!!! Kept my girls (and guys) locked in the coop today. Can't find a home(s) for stray and her puppies and the last couple of days there has been a black male stray skulking around, so I'm sure if the momma isn't in heat, she will be. I just hate the thought of coming home and finding my flock dead (again). Not sure what I'm going to do. The animal control nor the sheriff's office will help and our SPCA (from my understanding) is not open. I'm at a complete loss. Not only cannot I not afford to feed 8 dogs, but I don't want them (or any dogs) around my flock.

I've called the SPCA in Houston and Lufkin and they are not taking any strays.

Welcome Irish! Azle Texas here! Pretty new to chickens. Although I finally got my first egg on Saturday! I have learned a lot here.

Hi all, new to Backyard Chickens. My family & I are in Pearland, a suburb of Houston. We have 13, 5 week old pullets, a mixture of RIR, Cornish, Buff Orpingtons, Dominique, and an unknown Bantam my son had to have! We also recently took in an Easter present gone wrong orphan that is about 1 1/2 weeks old. Not sure yet what she is but thinking she is RIR. We are new to chickens so be prepared for lots of questions!

I feel your pain Vicki!!!
At least I only have 1 yellow lab to deal with. The dog "lives" next door...owner of the property is in prison until 2066, but he could get probation in 2036 if he behaves?!?!?! He was arrested and convicted for being involved with a 12 yr old girl...so I can track him through the child molestation web sites. Prison guy's parents are holding on to the property (for SOME reason) and put this lab there to help make the place look lived on. Most folks around here have about 10 acres or more. The parents are in their late 70's early 80's and live 2 hours away.
The last time I called the mother to try to explain the problems the dog was causing, she blew up on me!!! Shouted at me she was an old woman who couldn't do anything about the dog and to just go ahead and SHOOT him.
I too, contacted the SPCA, they emailed me and said they were working with the local authorities. I saw a sheriff's deputy come out and look for the dog with binoculars (dog was on my property), but dog didn't have one of my chickens in his mouth at the time.
Haven't heard anything else from SPCA.
The sheriff's deputies have been out here twice in the last 4 years, once about the dog and another time about the cattle on prison guy's land that got out and were running up and down the road. Both times I was told I could shoot the dog if he was harming my livestock.
I don't want to have the dog killed....it's not his fault he's been left all alone!!! I'm upset with the people who put him out here and left him all by himself.
Maybe an electric fence will have to be built??? But I'd rather that people be responsible for their dogs!!!

I am Deana and live just outside of Fort Worth Texas. Town called Rhome. Actually I am not far from the Texas Motor Speedway.
Used to live in the Houston area. Grew up in Sugarland till I was 9.

Lived in Conroe for a few years till I was married. Moved back to Texas in 89.

This is a great place to make new friends, and learn everything you want to know about chickens and breeds.
