Texas

So what exactly will this event look like? Sounds cool but Huntsville is a bit of a drive from Tyler. Just trying to decide if it would really be worth it.

It's basically going to be one big swap. The HSPCA will ( hopefully ) come again this year and bring some adoptable animals. Last year they brought two horses, five donkeys, and some chickens... not including the dogs/cats they brought. Our SHSU rodeo team has been invited to talk to people about college rodeo. Still sending out emails to a few vendors, going to try and get a few feed reps out again this year. Last year I was only able to get the Nutrena feed rep, but I'm going to try to get more than him this year.

I will try to locate some pictures from last year for ya'll. It's going to be fun. I'm going to bring a few buckets from home for some 'apple bobbing' for the kids, one for boiled eggs for kids to paint, etc.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We're going to be wanting as much fun stuff as we do informative. I'll also get more information on what this event is all about posted tonight when I get home from work.

Hi Texas Folks! I'm brand new to the community, but have been reading tons on here for a while. BYC is awesome for information for newbies like me!! We are ready to get our first chicks hopefully this week and will pick up our coop/nestingbox/run tomorrow. We live on two acres, but we want to start out small with four chickens. The run is only about 5x6, so we'll probably eventually expand it, but they'll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy our land. Here's my question: I originally planned to get pullets that were close to laying age. But it seems like most availability around here are chicks. I'm open to this, but wonder where the best place is to get 4 chicks. I have 3 daughters who would really like to "pick out" their own chicks, so someplace drive-able is preferred over ordering online. Any recommendations for a place to buy from a reputable source in Central Texas? I see a lot of you are from this area. I'm just north of Austin. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

I would recommend New Braunfels feed, if you are willing to drive that far south. They have posted all of their orders through May so you know what kind of chicks will be available:

We are also very new to raising chickens, our coop is being made right now, and we do not have chickens yet. I truly wished that I could start with chicks, but I feel like it would be too much work, we have 3 small children it would be too much for us,so we want to start with pullets,I found this ranch,http://www.bluestar-ranch.com/, cannot find any info about them, but when I called, the owner seemed very nice and knowledgeable, so I think we will take our chances with them, although we are still looking for references.

I thought I'd let everyone know that this weekend is the Brazos Valley Club Trade Days at the tractor supply 2911 East Austin Street, Giddings, TX

If you've never been to a Trade Day, it is set up like a flea market, but its all kinds of poultry. Roam around the sale sites, find the breeds and varieties you want, and make a deal. Buyers, you can be assured, all sellers WILL have their P/T certificate and their TAHC certificate.
There will be a concessions stand with a BBQ lunch available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Brazos Valley Poultry Club, a non-profit organization devoted to exhibition poultry in Texas.

I've never been to one but this sounds good and we are bring a couple of carriers and lots of $$ because we sure have chickenitis and having 3 hens isn't enough for us.

See ya there
