Do you need another breed of chicken?

In the past I have told people that I would get a table in the sales area if I have firm advance commitment from people to buy and then only bring what is pre-sold.

P.S. By the way, thanks Vicki for the update on your Cottage Hill & Bev Davis BCM's from Heaven Sent. I was happy to see photos of their progress.

New to this board. Looking to learn what type of chickens would be best suited for the DFW area and are also friendly in nature. Eggs wouldn't be bad either

I am in South Arlington. Right now I would say Mediterrian and smaller breeds are suited for this area, because of the heat. I have raise 15 different breeds, from hand size Cochins to Orpingtons and Wynadottes. Yard size is a big factor, and city codes as to how many. My Rocks, Orpingtons and EEs are the friendlyist, they are also awesome layers. Good luck and welcome

Washed my roo this past weekend to get ready for the show in 2 weeks. - He was FILTHY!!!! I may or may not give him another one this weekend. Geez, how do they get so freakin dirty?? He has stuff caked under his wings

YUCK!!! I'm hoping to get my entry forms in the mail this week, if not the Brazos Valley Poultry Club has them on their website. I'll print them off from there and mail them on Monday. I'll do my final head count this weekend to confirm what I'm taking. I'm really looking to January when I can show the BD and CH lines I have. I'm really interested to see how they will do. I'm just itching to be able to start breeding. The breeding pen will be finished this weekend. We finished the roof last weekend (it may have to have a few touch up as we've never laid shingles before so it will be interesting to see what happens if we ever get rain again

)

The way I took the pictures it looks like the roof is angling toward me, but it's actually not. The high end is where I'm standing taking the pictures. Odd. Oh well

I think for using old shingles and never doing it before it looks great. I'll try to take a better "finished" picture this weekend. We still have to do one wall and a new door, but that won't take long. If we can finish that this Saturday I can separate the ones I'm taking to the show on the 1st and get them cleaned and ready to go.
I got the test results back from the lab on my goats. Both girls came back CAE and CL negative

but for some reason the lab tech didn't test Momma Goat's blood. He's going to go back through the packaging tonight and see if he can find it.

It's just a personal choice, but I think I am preferring the CH line over the BD line. At least I like the cockeral in that group better than the other one. I'll try to get better pics this weekend. I'm still learning about faults and such so it's always great to get feedback from others.

The cockeral that I will be showing on the 1st is getting much better. Turns out the spots on his comb are just bites of some sort. I have been treating with iodine and his comb is so much better. I'm going to treat for mosquitoes as best I can. **** things - we are being overrun with them and we haven't had rain in weeks.

Over the past year I have owned exactly one Wade Jeane, one Bev Davis, and one Cottage Hill rooster. All of my ladies are Cottage Hill, so the Cottage Hill Cockerel was always in the plans to be our primary breeder and the others were back-ups while we were searching for a Cottage Hill Roo and waiting for offspring. We lost both our Bev Davis and Wade Jeane roo, so I am down to just one BCM roo now, but I liked all the cockerels we had. They were all from exceptional breeder's lines. I look forward to breeding the CH line going forward.

Our WJ had an amazing temperament. My 2 year old would chase that roo all over the place I never had to worry because he didn't have an aggressive bone in his body.

The BD cockerel was the one with the most vigor. He would stand in the opening to the run long after sun set guarding the door and was up before light in the morning. Heck he would even jump off the roost in the middle of the night to investigate if I came out for a final check before I turned in at night.

I have a hen & rooster that are supposed to be from WJ lines (bought hatching eggs). He is very handsome but a little mean. However we are working through that at the moment. The hen has been a disappointment as she does not lay very often and her eggs are fairly small. I went ahead and put a couple of her eggs in the incubator for my next hatch even though the eggs are a bit small. You have to work with what you've got I guess

Ya...the temperament of our WJ roo was a rare find. He was from a breeder in Wisconsin that has been working with Marans for more than 8 year. She is widely published in the Marans world and takes best of breed at every poultry show she is at.

A lot of people have played around with WJ line, so their is not any uniformity in it anymore. Unless you can find a good source the WJ may not be worth you time since you won't know what you are getting.

I was told that stock for the BD line were selected based on the merit of laying dark eggs and that a lot of other area were neglected which has resulted in hens with out the much need copper on their hackles and other defects.

The person I got my CH birds from got them directly from Ron Presley about 6 years ago. She said when she got her birds that most people felt that line was over priced so not many people invested in it. Now people are seeking out these older lines because the mixed lines birds and strains of lines that people claim to have improved have move further and further away from what makes a true Marans.

I feel very lucky to have a "pure" line that can be traced back to its origins and hope to be able to carry on a pure line for a long time.

Hello all. I just wanted to comment that I got my Black Copper Marans roo and hens from a man in Edgewood that told me he went to Houston about 12 years ago and bought baby chicks from the WJ line (no way to verify but no reason to doubt him either). I have been very happy with mine as my roo is extremely docile. I don't show but just got facinated with the Marans as layers and such. All of my Marans are docile, even the broody hens when I pull them off of an empty nest !
