Théo and the chickens des Sauches

A lovely morning and incredibly warm for the season but the wind started blowing in the afternoon and once the chickens went to sleep it turned into a storm. The chickens all stayed together in the chicken yard this morning, apart from Théo and Piou-piou who went exploring behind the old houses.
I noticed Laure has greyish spots on her wattles. Amazingly I managed to catch her to check and it's not dust, it's like grey fuzz. It could be fowl pox just beginning or some kind of fungal thing.

Then Gaston decided it was time to take his team out and I couldn't get him back in. Blanche was having a hard time without Gaston, being terrified of Kara, so I took her out a bit and put her in the Jerusalem artichokes with Gaston's team. There's a small spot that was covered in hay all spring and summer and is now full of bugs, where the chickens can scratch for ages. She enjoyed herself a lot, but when I put her back in the netted yard she went straight to sleep. I can't leave her in the garden without watching her because her vision is so impaired that she might not be able to hide or run from a raptor.

Lilly is doing great, she’s definitely more active, but not her foot. It has gotten worse and she is slightly limping again. Tonight I tried to open it a bit but almost nothing came out, very quickly it was blood. I’m afraid it is not going to be a quick fix.

Poor Nougat has gotten to the stage of molt where she is terrified of Gaston. She went to sleep in the nest tonight because she didn't want to be next to him, which is their usual place. She's such a hedgehog that I didn't try to get her back on the roost. The good thing is that she will be more quickly out of it. It's the second time she is having such a hard molt and like last year, she reminds me a bit of Myazaki’s yubaba in Spirited away.

However I saw her do an healthy poop for the first time in maybe two months !

Tonight there is a lot of wind. We’re hoping no branch from the linden tree falls off into the house 🤞!

Your post is good every time, but this one is especially good, with the sequence shots and lovely captions.

The sequence is wonderful!

Thank you but all credits are due to the model 😂.
In real life, while he displays a lot of energy, he has been having a horrible rattling sound in his mouth for quite some time now. It sounds like something broken. I checked inside his beak several times and did not see anything.
I wonder if roosters hide their illness even more than hens ? His behaviour is 100% normal but the noise he makes is very worrying, and it's getting more and more constant whereas it used to be only when he made an effort.

I got a surprise in the mailbox ...the BYC calendar ! Thank you @Sequel ! :wee :wee
I am amazed at how professional the pictures look. They come out really well printed. And it even includes the playboy @HiEverybirdy 's beautiful Merle !

The wind last night was terrible. I woke up at four, the wind had calmed and the male cat Grochatila was still not back in, we hadn't seen him since yesterday morning, so I went to look for him. I didn't find him, and at first glance didn't see too much damage around the place . But in the morning we found out the polytunnel had been half ripped off and all the hoops had been blown down 😬. We didn't take it off last week because it was too wet ! We’re hope to be able to reshape them with heat.
The cat came back for breakfast !

Then we had a really pleasant day, no wind at all. Putting the polytunnel's plastic away for winter was a bit of a nightmare as always, but the chickens really enjoyed watching us. And the uncovered trenches are full of tasty things.

But I had a very unpleasant surprise tonight at roost time. Since Pied-Beau is gone, I don't supervise roosting anymore, I just make sure Théo is able to sneak in. And I said the flock seemed much more relaxed since his departure. Never say things are going well because you're always proved wrong almost right away.
This evening I did stay a bit and I discovered Gaston is pecking the three ex-batt's roosting next to him badly. They are terrified of him now ! Cannelle and Nougat were both trying to hide away in the nest, and Blanche who has him on her blind side kept coming back toward him, getting pecked, moving away and coming back. It was very hard to watch, and I was totally surprised.

Just three days ago I said that Gaston is usually pretty good with the hens. I don't know what's going on, if it's because they are molting, because they began rejecting him first, because they are sick...it really feels like he doesn't want them near by anymore🙁. And because they are old, molting and impaired I can't help feel really bad for them.
