Sorry for your loss!! I have had 3 lost to a Red Tail Hawk. Where your neighbors sympathetic?
When AC said sign your dog over - does that mean it was euthanized or going to the pound? If the pound, you know darn well they will not tell the next people that adopted the dog. Well at least around me they don't.
The Animal Control Officer said that if the dog were friendly, they'd try to rehome it into a city home. But. . . it wasn't a friendly dog, so it will be euthanized. And I'm in Cochise County. Everybody took this very seriously, and I won't hesitate to call again. In fact, they told me of there are any other issues, so call immediately.
The AC officer did tell the people they needed to offer us compensation. That said, the older woman who lives there is traveling right now. I think she'll want to make it right. The younger ones. . . well, they really didn't care. When I went over to confirm it was their dog, the only response I got was, "Oh." No apology. No response that this was serious. But again, I think when the older woman gets home, she'll want to make it right.
And like I told the deputy and the Animal Control officer, even if nothing happened this time (I really didn't know they'd take the dog right away), I wanted it on record in case it happened again. I will report every incident.
And the dog had to work to get to my chickens. The pasture with the chickens is surrounded on 3 sides with hot wire. The side that is against our house pasture is just livestock fenced. The dog came under our front gate, peed on my front porch (my dogs found that), went over/under/? the fence to the chicken pasture, went into the chicken house door, then squeezed through a tiny 6"x12" opening into the coop to kill. And this was a big dog! He killed one in the chicken house (a mama chicken with 4 babies), 3 hens and the duck in the roost, and he was carrying the Silkie roo outside when I drove up. It wasn't like the dog just walked in and got chickens - he had to try to get in there.
