Well, our chicks are now 4 weeks old and are doing great. We have enough chick starter to last for the next 4 weeks so they will be 8 weeks old. That is what is recomended on the lable to feed until 8 weeks old. I told my hubby to go there and get chicken grower feed since that is was I have read they should be eating after the starter until they are laying age. (We have two ducks that are 6 and 8 weeks old now so we were just going to get the next step of food to start feeding them.) Well he comes home with a 50 lb bag of Kruse's Perfection poultry feed. I look at the lable attached and it says 17% Lay crumbles. I called the feed store and told them they sold my hubby the wrong feed. They told me "no that is what they feed after the starter. Once my chicks start laying then they can have the pellets to save on the wasted food, but that is the same feed." Now my question is is this food going to be ok for my chicks or is it going to cause health problems (prolapse, liver damage, etc?

From what I can tell.

Some feed mills make 2 feeds a starter/grower for up to laying age an a layer for after.
Others make a chick starter for the first few weeks, a grower for after that up to the first egg an a layer for then on.

That brand may be one that only makes 2 types an you would stick with the starter/grower till they start to lay....

Ether way they dont need a layer feed till there laying age.

Some breeds Ive gave layer way early an they were fine an others they start dieing off..... If they only carry a starter an a layer I would find a new feed store. They should have a grower. Changing brands should not be an Issue.

What I use comes as a starter/grower an a layer... I like only having to keep 2 types

What is the nutritional difference between starter and grower?

Edited: a different feed store then what I normaly go to said they could get me bags of it, they just don't carry it all of the time since most people don't use it.
