Thanksgiving? in the UK!!!

We serve a typical Yankee Thanksgiving meal..
Turkey..
Mashes taters
Mashed butternut squash with butter and brown sugar
peas and usually another veggie too
bread stuffing with turkey gibblets (or sausage) and celery and onion
french meat-pie stuffing (that goes in the bird..)
cranberry sauce
Pumpkin pie
chocolate pudding pie
Plus more that i cant remember right now..

ETA: We never do ham on Thanksgiving.. hams for Christmas or Easter...

And prime rib is usually for New Years...

As an adult I learned to serve them differently than my mother did. I slice the sweet pottoes into thick long slabs oil the a tiny bit bake for an hour, butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and mmmmm good! I saute the squash in slices with garlic and onion.....

For us it's
Turkey for Thanksgiving
Turkey and ham for Christmas or Ham and fried chicken
nobody likes lamb so again, it's ham and fried chicken. Both go well with potato salad which is a given on Easter (good way to get rid of all those hard boiled eggs).

We have relatives who are not Jewish but who observe old testament food law. They don't expect to be catered to though, and we don't cater to them. If pork of some type is on the menu usually they bring a small meat dish, or just skip the meat altogether. Works for me. And this is a family of four, I can't imagine changing menus for one person. But then, my MIL does that and I've just never understood it. She even caters menus to preferences. My husband's family is much smaller than ours so there aren't as many preferences I suppose, but it still seems crazy to me. If they don't like it they can skip it and eat more of something else. I wonder what she'd do if I admitted to the fact that I don't like anything she cooks? Hmmm...

The best thing about Thanksgiving over here, is that it is a holiday everyone can celebrate and enjoy! It's not a religious holiday, it's not an ethnic holiday, it is a celebration that everyone can participate in.

Yams are really good if you cut the sugar down and use honey, I cooked them at christmas last year and it seemed to go over well.
