My chickens have been squatting for a good part of the week. Only one has started to lay. How long do they do this squatting thing before they start laying?

Also, when they squat, I can't help but start petting them. Is this ok or does this stress them out? Whenever I do this, the other hens seem to mill around as if getting in line to be petted.

My chickens still squat every time I pet or even walk out. I pet them and normally they stop, but at times they don't, I just pick them up and put them back on there feet, that makes them quit.

I'll have to try that. Squatting sometimes gets annoying when you are trying to chase them into the coop....
