That was HILARIOUS!

We've been working in the yard preparing for Spring, and when we do that, it's more fun to have the chickens "help" than the dogs. So the dogs get put in the house and the birds let out.

Husband was walking past the front door to the coop, and one of the Red Stars was standing there. She squatted as he walked past, a true, honest to goodness full blown squat! I was taking a break at the fire pit and watched it happen, and husband points down, looks at me, and goes "What the heck is she doing??". I started laughing, the look on his face when that hen sat down like that, was SO FUNNY! I was like "Pet her on the back!", so he does, and she fluffed up and ran off.

Apparently that's the first time he's ever seen anything like that. The Red girls squat when ever you get close to them. He was like "What is that for?" and I explained that she must have thought he was a rooster. So then he blushed because the chicken "thought he was cute". OMG. So hilarious. Poor city guy, getting stuck with a girl like me.

because the hens need to be woken up so eggs can be laid early enough for my boyfriend to have fresh eggs for breakfast!

How long are your chickens out and dogs in? And do they find thier own way back to the coop/run or do you have to "drive" them home? I've been wanting to do the same but know that if my dogs will catch and eat a bunny, they sure would do the same to my chickens.

The poor "flat Landers" that are under informed about country livin'.

It's not as bad, I guess, as some of our kids thinking that eggs, milk, steak, bread & a few other things all come from the STORE!!!!!!

Too bad the only reality available seems to be called a tv show.

I have 2 dogs of the 3 that are alright with the chickens. The other, she can't stand it unless she's on leash and doing her "if I ignore it, I won't get in trouble" routine. But let a chicken take off running across the yard. I can put her in the house and leave the other two out, but that seems mean and she acts like it is. So I put all the dogs up. My chickens are great about being "herded" back, and sometimes I use my Beauceron pup to help since she has good herding drives. On leash right now, she's still in training.

The chickens are cool with the dogs, and don't seem to realize one of the 3 has it out for them if they flutter around in an enticing way. But I keep a rotation going, not like I keep the dogs in all day or anything. Like around 4 I'll set them out, we'll work till dark, they'll go to bed themselves, then I let the dogs back out and we'll have a bonfire. Or I'll give them a bit in the morning so I can work the puppy with them.
