I guess we are all in the same boat. I started with 3...yea right. Then I found out there were more than your average white chicken out there in the world....OMG I had to choose... what a job. Started in 2007, By the end of the Summer of 2007, I had 30 birds. Still struggling to narrow down my choice of Breeds...I needed cages for their protection and to keep from mixing Breeds. Today, end of 2008 season....I have 5 chicken coupes and one peacock coupe....over 70 birds and still hatching.
Once the bird trusts you and knows you care about them, they care back...in their own way...that is...until you open the coupe door, then all bets are off.
Oh, still working on ten coupes, ten breeds (right). Husbands tend to adjust. My husband went from stupid chickens...to spending time watching them...and building cages, etc for them. And he should complain about the feed costs since I go through 6 bags of feed per month. But...he does not complain...not once.
