Why should you have to go spend money on more fence, a paintball gun, or anything.
The neighbor is not taking care of their responsibiliy, nor do they care.

Kill it and be done with it. They allready told you to do it.

We were having the same problem, the people up the road even paid me for a couple chickens thier old dog killed. Then when we told them that we were getting alpacas and in no way could have them down here and possibly chasing and hurting them they said by all means if you have to shoot them......Talk about giving someone else your responsibility. I called the sherifs office and they told me that if I caught them the sheriff would come out and shoot them for me but I would have to get rid of the bodies. Needless to say my hubby shot the younger one with a BB gun about 3 times before they got off out property the last time and the older dog ran like mad..lol I saw them the other day and the took a wide birth around our property by way of the water ways in the field around us. They will not come on our property again. You truely have to do what it best for you and just explain to your children that sometimes unpleasant things have to happen to protect what you have. You are just teaching them that what is yours is values very much. Jenn

The leash laws were passed to mainly protect people. I would hate to lose my birds but dogs running around pose a danger to any child not behind a fence. Irresponsible dog owners chap my hide!

The fact that you are mentally or emotional conficted over this issue shows that you have compassion. However you and your family choose to deal with this, let your children know how you feel. When all is said and done you'll have taught your children something far more valuable. You sound like a thoughtful parent.

I love the idea of taking them to the pound. Nothing hurts people more than when you hit them in the wallet. I've seen even the most high and mighty dog owners learn to keep their dogs in after they've had to pay a couple hundred to get their dog out.

However, if that's not an option and you don't have a bb or paintball gun, do you own a 12 gauge shotgun? You can order bean bag bullets (NOT rubber bullets) from a sporting goods store. They are shot from the gun at a fairly close range and will really thump the dog without killing it. We use it on brown bears here and it's enough to scare them off. Just be sure not to hit them in the head or at point blank. And make absolutely sure you get bean bags, not rubber bullets. The rubber bullets have been known to kill bears, so they'd do a dog in in no time.

Best of luck. I understand the dilema you're in.
