I know how you feel. I been cooking for over 30 years. This year I told my daughter we were going to have dinner around 5-6PM. Her reponse: Why are you having dinner so late? Hmmm...because I darn well want too.

Excellent response! After 30 years of cooking, YOU should call the shots on the time!
I see it's not just me that has to deal with all of the foolishness that come along with the holidays!​

One year I made a full on Mexican meal for Christmas Eve.
Tamales, rice, refried beans, guacamole, salsa, fresh tortilla chips, flan.

Dinner is at 6.

Kids show up at 7:30 when they got around to it.

"Where's dinner?" they ask.

"In the fridge", says I as we are watching a movie on TV. "Plates are in the cupboard and microwave is on the counter. Honey, pass me another margarita."

My mother in-law(ALWAYS has to be in control somehow-I swear) called me last night and said, "Would you like me to bring some of these nice silver trays to serve bread on?". I told her I had trays, but if she wanted to bring them, I'd find somewhere to stick them. Went right over her head, but it made me feel better.

On another humorous note, I woke up this morning to find that my insane doxie had gone into the laundry room, pulled out the last bra I own and chewed it clean in two(the rest are already history). I hate wearing them, so maybe he thought he was doing me a favor.

MIL just has to do salad and potatoes...

I am guessing htat this is a change in time fromwhat you have done the last 30 years? If that is indeed the case, dd asking why so late is not really inappropriate--you've changed a tradition. Not that it is not your right as the hostess to make that decision, but it DOES affect others plans, and based upon history, they probably expected dinner at the usual time.

If we were invited somewhere that was not a regular place, I would not know when to expect the holiday dinner, and would expect that it could be anywhere from noon to 8 pm. But if I had gone to the same place every year for 30, and it was always at the same time, a drastic change in time would throw me for a loop.​
