Okay, sure I can see that. But the main way masks work - at least for Covid, since the particles are so small - is it blocks the droplets from our mouths and nose from flying outward toward other people. The covid virus 'rides' on the larger particles that we expel.
The virus is so small that, by itself, it can penetrate most face coverings to some extent (although this varies greatly depending on the type of mask - some are good at filtering). But it's rare for a virus particle to be floating in the air all alone; they need a larger droplet to travel any distance.
