Like I said, 1st time. I tried doing feathers, but had no luck, so I just did some “lines”. I will keep practicing though! @cherrynberry if you don’t mind me asking, how did you self teach yourself? Did you just try to “copy“ a picture from Google? (That’s what I did). Anyway I hope it’s good! Sorry for the bad quality, it’s getting dark outside.

I started out with drawing simple sketches. I find using a reference photo much easier. So, I would prepare a reference photo, preferably one that is flatter. So for example, instead of a chicken from the front of the face, I would choose a picture of a picture taken from the side. So, the photo would appear flat and parallel to the face. Hope that makes sense.

This is the easiest way to draw for me. So I practiced every single day and I did 2-3 sketches a day. I still do around 1-3 sketches everyday working on my weaknesses. I have never been a patient person, so I couldn't stand taking a class. I like to watch a movie or listen to music while doing sketches. Sometimes, I get really busy, so I sketch at night. Either way, practice makes perfect!

Thanks you for the great advice! Next time I’ll use a reference photo. I’m going to try do to at least 2 sketches a day from now on. I hope I’m not disturbing you, but when you say reference photo, do you mean a pciture of a real chicken, or a sketch chicken? Thanks so much once again

My tips would be:

1.) Use a softer pencil (2B or 4B)
2.) Practice sketching lightly and using the side of the pencil instead of the tip.
3.) Use a reference photo
4.) Learn how to grasp simple shapes and know how to put them on paper.
5.) Have fun. Never sit for too long, take a walk and come back to it. There is no need to do everything in one sitting.

Good luck! :pop

I like to use photos of real chickens. In my opinion, it is never a good idea to copy another sketch. Everyone has a different style, so it doesn't make sense. I recommend using high quality photos. I like to find google images that I like. Then, right-click and press "open image in new tab". It blows up the image and makes it much easier to draw.

And no, you are not bothering me. :)

Thank you soooooo much for helping me. Now I have basically everything to get started. If you want I can post weekly updates or daily. So sorry I forgot to mention this, but should I draw the WHOLE chicken, or just the head ? On a full size of paper or a little one like the one I drew on before? Thanks so much for all you help so far!
