I've also heard that Jumbo Guinea fowl are also delicious. I am thinking about those for next spring. Best fowl I have personally had was the muscovy duck. Dee-licious!!! One nasty drake made for a great meal for our small family of 3. With leftovers for my lunch next day.

I had duck once, it either wasnt prepared well, or duck is very very greasy and gamey.

I want to know how to get quotes inside of quotes. I can't figure it out!
hit the multi button at the bottom right on all the ones you want edited into the post. You can then add or delete some of the comment from there. the last one hit quaote or reply.
So people are raising them primarily for eggs and meat just like chickens and the occasional show/pet as well. Interesting.
Yeppers! Over on the quail board they talk about breeding for bigger eggs, less crowing, and taking out aggressive breeders just like chickens.
To quote my 75 year old father, and a long time quail hunter, "Quail is some of the best eatin' you'll ever taste".
My father is 81 I just hatched him out some coturnix and pickled some eggs for him. He's lovin it! he doesn't hunt anymore ect an occasional rabbit or squirrel. I think they say coturnix is all dark meat? bob's maybe more of a mix? I don't know never tasted them myself. well since I've been an adult I'm sure I had plenty as a kid along with pheasant, squirrel, rabbit ect. LOL

Candled my Iowa Blue "Spring Hatch" last night and only 1 quitter! That leaves 48 moving into lockdown tonight. I am a bit worried though, I have been running a dry hatch in my Reptipro but the humidity has been really high in the house and averaging in the 40's in the bator. The air cells are looking a little small but I'll just have to cross my fingers I guess.

My dad always said quail was real good also but would never let us kids hunt them cause they were/are sparse around here being that folk come to our parts to hunt them and have almost wiped them out .... Now I have tasted duck and if its cooked good its good but I guess I am not too good at cooking it cause it tasted livery lol

If you have a dehumidifier you could plug that in the room for a while but I think at this point 40's would be ok. You could maybe try not adding any water until you see the first pip when you go into lockdown .I don't know how the reptipro works or what it looks like. I only have styrofoam hovabators and can see the eggs fromthe window.

The more times you hatch and candle the more comfortable and confident you become. I leave all eggs unless they smell. I do not set cracked eggs or over porous eggs. It is not worth the headache or possible complications or contamination of good eggs.

Everyone has good questions and concerns!

Make sure you are sanitizing your hands during egg handling. It cuts down on blood rings too. Less handling is best.

I have three very pourous RIR eggs, two are developing one is iffy, I just can't see and the two others I can barely make out the veins but DO see them and one I even seen the embryo moving a little. Should I watch these extra close for complications, maybe move them to one side?

I over wash I think lol I use antibacterial dawn dish soap, It cuts through anything on my hands I even scrub my fingernails well etc,.. before handling eggs and make my son do the same...I probably have handled them to much though, but everything is developing fine and have decided the lid wont open again until the next candling. I can already tell I am going to be devastated over the ones who don't make it, I sort of have a hunch that one egg was developing and can even see the embryo but it isn't moving AT ALL and that it may be a quitter...My 5year old just about cried, I wanted to with him!

I think we are a bunch of babies around here, My S.O. looked at me like

we were weirdos. Oh well, I told him wait and see I bet you will be just as attached to these babies as we will be, he says no, but he is soft hearted I know he will be making special trips to the coop to go see the chickens.
