Yay! Now, any chance you could start wishing that my hens would lay? The gods of wishes listen to you.

Of course, Tani! That's me, The Wisher! It's my job, it's what I do...... here you go....

Consider it done!

Yes, especially when the "safe" eggs from commercial farms are so often chock full of additives we don't want to eat. The thought of store bought eggs makes me gag now. I am looking forward to getting some ex-battery hens this year, w00t!

Okay, I'm probably going to get attacked for saying this, but here it goes. I was talking to the guy that does my NPIP testing and he mentioned that people who get commercial chickens and introduce them to backyard flocks are really taking a dangerous chance. It seems that commercial layers are often vacinated against LOTS and LOTS of diseases and that seems a good thing, at first. The problem is, the vacines used are often live virus vacines and the hens become carriers (constantly shedding the viruses) and any unvacinated chickens are vulnerable. I have always been touched and impressed by people that rescue them. Now, I'm not sure it is so smart.

Hey, Jess! I'm likely going to hatch some of my own Marans and Olive eggers, but I'm not 100%. How about you?.

Wow, that's actually something I hadn't thought about. Those poor hens get put through so much. I wouldn't want to risk any of the breeding stock that I have, but I still really, really want to get some ex-battery hens and just get them out of that place

I feel so bad for them.

I am definitely in, I so enjoyed last years!!!!! This will give me an excuse to try out my new Bator I just built. It is definitely the most extravagant one I ever built. It has a incubator side and a hatcher side. The best part it is 99.9% ( except screws and nails and a thermostat) made from recycled/re-purposed materials. Other than the time invested it only cost me about $50. Here are the pics

THat is the most impressive hand made bator I ever seen! WOW!
