Mom knows best!

She is my own *breed* of chicken
I have been breeding dual purpose chickens for 30 years. They do not have a name..they are large, good foragers, robust, healthy, good egg layers, great mothers. Hens are about 6-7 lbs and cockerels are about 10lbs. Very predator wary. I breed about 200 chicks a year to sell for food and I grow 60 for myself for food and keep two good pullets a year. I usually cull the hens at 6 years and roosters at two years. I keep 6 hens and one rooster with the best cockerel and two pullets threw the winter with this line.

I thought she may be one that we discussed!! Cool!! I would love to see pics of them! do you have them in a chicken file?

Quote: I might have a few in there...I can take pictures of a complete 4 generation tomorrow..One of the things you can see is the tail placement..They all have beautiful hard feathered tents..no wry tail. Nice breast meat. Great temperaments. I have never worked on color with them. I have always worked on weight and health. I get several colors.

Thought I would post a few picks of the variety of colors I get from the Muscoveys

This is my breeding stock

These are feed out chicks from my stock ..the chicks feather fast because I do not heat as hot as other do..these chicks are a few days old.

This is a young cockerel my DH liked and wanted me to keep..I still have him but he is a cull..He is huge for his age, just lacking in chest.

More scovy pics and a few baby ducks

This is a really old chicken..she was laying regular at the age of 7. I hated to cull her but at her age I did not want her to fall ill. She was giving up feathering after molt to continue to lay..

These were her last chicks. I kept one.

This is the grand daddy of them all..He was a big bird..I have a picture of him later in this group
..
This field is planted with Oregano, spinach, kale, squash, and pumpkin for the birds..it looks like this in late fall..they live in this field.

Grandaddy..that is a cake pan..he weighed over 12 lbs after butcher. and was delicious at his advanced age. I slow roasted him just like a turkey.

OMGoodness! I didn't see that one coming!! Well, he was beautiful, and then again, just as beautiful in the roasting pan.
