Hey guys. I have a couple bators gpoing since Feb 4. They started hatching out on Sunday Feb 20. I have been watching them amd have 21 chicks. I have had a couple pip out until i could see their beaks then just stop and die. Is this common? What can I do to prevent it. I helped one hatch and wasnt sure if that was the right thing to do. The chick seems health but has the egg membrane matted to its back and I cant put it in the brooder because the rest of the chicks think the membrane is interesting nd he ends up with a crowd of ten or 15 chicks pecking at his back. I am thinking that it may dray up and fall off in a few days then he can join his siblings.

Sorry to hear that !!

Would it be feasible to put dabs of blu-cote on her and place her with the others. I don't think the others will nibble on the blu-cote.

:hit RIP My blue girl! OMG Her bumblefoot came back and I didnt even know it!

Stupid WINTER GO AWAY! I have NO LUCK with this breed!! OMG!!!

I'm so sorry Sally. I have hit many brick walls with my Barnevelders. I have thought about giving up on them, but I just can't - I love them too much. But I certainly am frustrated. Sure, you can still participate!
Okay ladies, you're both making me very nervous as I am setting both Cochins and Barnevelders for this Hatch-A-Long. Is there something I should know in particular about either breed?
I have a cochin and besides the fact that she is crippled and doesn't lay well shes a nice bird. I wouldn't worry.

I kept hymning and hawing about trying shipped eggs again. Waited last minute to let fate decide. Contacted a heritage Plymouth Barred Rock breeder and guess fate wants another go at shipped. Never had good luck (best hatch was less than 25% with mail eggs) but this one will be from the West not South of me. Hopefully it will be kinder passage.

I've already 12 eggs turning from my own birds...may be a big hatch or I'll cull all odd and old of mine before setting.

Sally, so sorry to hear about your girl. I just lost my favorite hen this week. Something happened to her right foot. The entire foot mummified. Frostbite, loss of circulation otherwise? I don't know. The others are fine and have a nice insulated coop. Sad, but that's the way it goes, I suppose. I've got her kids growing out, though, so hopefully they take on momma's torch.

So pleased to see the Iowa Blue article. They did a nice segment on them, I think, and congrats Kari - so glad they used that photo. :)

I had that happen recently. I got a bowl of 99 degree water and gave it a good soak making sure not to drown the poor little guy.. I then popped it back in the bator to dry. Most of its feathes fluffed up but there are some areas where he looks a tad bald. he is holding bis own in the brooder.

I have used a paper towel soaked in warm water to loosen it and tweezers to slowly help pick it away. It survived.
