One of my two chicks is dead. Somehow, the Icelandics pulled it through the cage it was in with the broody and tore it apart, then started eating it. I thought that cage was safe

Why do chickens eat live young?!

Congrats to all the winners of the Funny Posting Contest!
Is there a consolation prize for worst hatch rate? I just candled and all my eggs save one are infertile

I'm so bummed. Apparently I'm just not meant to have Marans, and to just keep blowing money for no reason

.
Yes there is, but we already have 3 people out with nothing hatching.

YIPPEE. Candled last night and pulled out 7 quitters and/or clears but still have 27 of 51 developing. I could see little toes and movement in 27. There an an additional 5-6 that are questionable. I know a lot can happen in this next 7 days but so far so good! I have one air cell that is completely sideways. It was a perfectly rounded Barnevelder egg that I may have placed wrong side up. Should I leave it one it's side with the air cell up? I have no idea which end the air cell should be in due to the shape. I am getting really anxious for next Saturday!
I would lay it on it's side. Sometimes it's really hard to tell the wide end on Barnie eggs. If it was incubated upside down, the chick may pip the wrong end.
Yay our setting got recorded, but I see I didn't put down my guess for how many would hatch. Is it too late for that? If so no problem, if not I'll guess 31,111
Pssssst, go to the link for the Hatching contest and submit a different guess. Only 7,629 were set - so there's no way 31,111 will hatch.

My second chick made it through the night! Her eyes are open and she's moving more, AND screaming away for all the world to hear. I'll get pictures later when she's up on her feet. Mama was off the nest this morning and showing the first chick how to eat

Yay!

Oh no, I am so sorry. It's their flock protection instincts.

I candled and weighed today. weigh loss is only like 2% yikes! but the air cells look pretty good for day 15. a little small but def more then day 7.
Not sure if it is because it's snowing or my scale is way off.

shouldn't I have around 10% weigh loss by now?
I have no water in incubator and never added any at all. I will weigh again tomorrow maybe I read the scale wrong. What's odd is the one clear egg lost the most weight.
If it is weighes low again tomorrow I may move the whole incubator to a different drier room until lockdown.
wonky weather or wonky eyes.today not sure which.
