I want a male to protect my flock. Be kind to me and my mother and our dog. Our last rooster protected our flock wonderfully and took his job to the fullest! He was wonderful to chicks and fathered them to. So I will lean to whichever rooster is better. But I want one of them to...

I just had another animal attack. Except the one killed my new rooster Elvis! Killed 4 hens. My mom was crying because it took our speckled Sussex. Took our Ameracana. Took our Rhode island red and our barred rock. We have their kids under our silkie. We have 1 large fowl left... an ancona hen... I have no rooster to protect my flock. We think I had a mink and a fox attack at the same time.

oh no it' will be OK have you tried using a granulated coyote pee those are great to repel fox's and if you can stuff every rat sized hole with hard-wire cloth and put hard-wire cloth apron's down as least a foot into the ground around where to keep your birds .

I am so sorry!

Roosters do what yours have done, which is die when the predator attacks. Even the biggest baddest rooster is still a chicken. Raccoons will kill any Rooster, even big Oriental breeds. A good rooster will alert to danger and then die to try to save the Hens.

Stop free ranging
predator proof the coop and runs. There are a lot of coop tips in the coops pages for predator proofing. You should be able to get a coop up to a point where only a bear will get in.

You seem to live in a predator prone place so special measures need to be taken to protect the flock.

Foxes can climb fences.

And they can jump about 8 feet or more.

We are putting a fence in today. We are getting a pitbull and we put our goat into the pasture. She is pregnant and is very angry so whatever come through the fence she will kill it. Also the chickens were in the pasture and the fence is chicken fence. We still don't know how they got in here!

Chicken wire is to keep chickens IN, it will not keep predators OUT.
