5th Annual 2014 Easter Hatch-a-long!

Now's your chance to show off your​

eggs-traordinary egg dying and artistic ability!​

A panel of judges will determine the winner!
All eggs will be judged based on the following factors:
The Design
(theme, uniqueness, and overall appeal)
Artistic & Technical Merit
(quality of work with media, clean edges, glue hidden, attractive finishing, etc.))
Creativity
(use of unique ideas/materials)

PLEASE NOTE UPDATE:
We were thinking of this as a Creative Egg Dying Contest (and gave suggestions as such, see link below to ideas!), but don't want to exclude folks with a desire to do artistic egg drawings/carvings. While the egg drawings/carvings are amazing - most people do not have that ability and we would like to see this contest filled with entrants!
Therefore we will open another prize for Artistic Egg Decorations.
So we will have a DYED EGG PRIZE AND AN ARTISTIC EGG PRIZE! ​

"No climb fence"....do tell, do tell! What is it???

its spend but has the same size holes . not welded and is super strong its woven or looped. much harder for predators to climb. the best part its harder for critters to push up as well.

I had some moron try to ship me eggs in an egg carton stuffed into a bubble envelope. And the idiot at the post office TOLD him to do it that way that they would be fine. I'm not sure which of them was stupider!!!

I always send a email how I like them packed and not I will tell them how I ship mine too . Like Ron said Oz's email is a great idea.

I had a shipment packed in Saw Dust; the eggs did very well. It was a very heavy box:

Our new Genesis Hovabator came in. I was not aware it was being shipped UPS and I provided a PO Box which they do not deliver too.....so in their fair wisdom they decided to pick a street address for delivery....which was not even close to where it needed to be. Thank goodness for honest people because the recipient immediately realized he did order an incubator he went on the internet and looked up DH and found our farm on the internet and called. Needless to say, I have a few words for UPS for their random redirection and the company where I ordered it because their site did not notate that they need a street address. UGH! By the way, DH telephone number was on the outside of the package. Imagine that, calling the recipient to get the correct address instead of picking one out of thin air. I have had run ins with UPS before for the same thing but it was for a customer at work. Once again, PO BOX issue. I spoke directly to the UPS site and they told me they have a index they use for PO Boxes which they use to reference PO Box to street addresses. Sometimes our customer would get their daily package, but unfortunately most the time it was shipped 2 hours out of the way.....they did not even get it to the correct town! (Sorry if anyone works for them. I know you do not make the rules.) - Off my ranting

Anyway, DH now has two incubators...one for incubating and one for hatching. We can do staggered hatches...so bring it on! I see hatching eggs up until it gets too hot in the summer and then we can start again in the fall.

I just had a hen go broody. Why couldn't she have waited for the 29!!!!!

She can wait a couple of weeks. I've held broodies off for a couple of weeks, while collecting eggs (or due to heat, or too many broodies hatching at the same time) and haven't had any issue.

Well I shall have an interesting time of it. Because of technical delays (disasters) I got my pre-Easter hatch set late so that Hatching Day is the same as Setting Day for Easter Hatchalong. I am converting the fish tank brooder into a hatcher so I can conduct the lockdown in it and free the incubator for he Easter eggs.

"Fish tank brooder" - That's one of the things I really like about BYC, we casually use terms like fish tank brooder, and everyone understands. Good luck!

Good Morning everyone! Spring made another attempt here in Michigan yesterday - 50 degree temps and sun and lots of melting! I think we have already lost most, if not all of the 6+ inches of snow that fell earlier this week! HURRAY!!!

And to top it off, the sap is running nicely in the Maple trees - not only did our standby back Maple start running, but our front Maple tree ran for the first time (that we have caught it) in the last 3 years of tapping!!! Maple Syrup here we come!! After a brief cool down today and tomorrow, it looks like 40's all next week and maybe beyond!

Now if only the flood in our backyard would drain so I can get back to the Rock coop without a canoe...

I tried to encourage our veteran broody BO to think about sitting again yesterday, by giving her extra eggs while she was sitting in a nest to lay her egg. She took them readily enough, but later I found her out running around with the others. Oh well, she has TWO WEEKS to think about it. Meanwhile I will air out the Styro Incubators and prepare to start eggs in them if necessary.

I am getting excited with all the cute chick and duckling pics on here!

No fair that all you continuous hatchers have babies already! Can't wait till set day!!!!

I can't wait to see them hatch!

If the bin is empty, they drop 6 ft. and then the rest of the packages drop on top of it! Hopefully, the one that hits the egg package will not be too heavy.

I can't figure out why shippers think that tissue paper and foam egg cartons will protect an egg when packages have to go through that.

OMG, I'm guilty of that. Had no idea about the 6 foot drop.

OMG, I'm guilty of that. Had no idea about the 6 foot drop.

This is what they do at a USPS Center. It does not show the Airborne exchange.

Did you see the way they drop the package out of the dump bin? That happens 4 times at least with an Air shipped package.

I am happy that many of us on here will take the time to pack correctly!

ronott1, have you ever seen the video how (I think Murray McMurray) packs their hatching eggs they sell? yes, Murray McMurray

Other than you'll want to open that package outside, anyone have thoughts on that method.

I watched that video and I think that looks really cool and that it might work really well. But I really don't know what I'm talking about seeing how I have never shipped or received shipped eggs
