Love the spots..matches your skirt, or pants, or dress..or what ever it is. Cute photo. All of your babies are cute, but there is something about those polka dots. I have some Paint Silkie eggs coming, they have the polka dot look to them when they hatch too. What is this breed? A splash.....?

Quote: I know! they are the Lav ameracauna! I will take a photo box shot of them tomorrow! one is weird though.... its yellowish is that weird or what? I dont know much about that breed though. I will snap a pic of that one tomorrow too. I think most the CCL are MALES again!!! what is up with that!! I have never hatched so many boy chicks ever!! frustrating!

Sally, you aren't thinking splash on the yellowish one? And why is that male gene so strong..always more males..well, most always. I hope you get ya some girls in there.

Oh yeah! Cute chicks, please feel free to flood us with chick pics as often as you'd like! And I believe the garment in question is men's boxers....Polkadot is a standard pattern for them, no? Cynthia, I'm a chick. AND, good idea, 'raining my favorite breed of chicken'. Next big score on chicks I will attribute to the weather, if DH asks...

My delaware chickens are officially addicted to egg eating I have oyster shell with calcium in there pen and golf balls in there nest. I really wanted to hatch some but have not been able to arrive at the nest at the right time to get their eggs out before they eat them. I guess the only option is roll out nest???
Try liquid calcium and a vitamin D Supplement.

Also, make sure the nest boxes are dark. If there is too much light, you can make curtains with netting or other dark material.

There is a thread on here that has plans for making roll out nests but try the above first.

I love the spotted ones. I get these out of my backyard mix of bantams all the time. They usually grow up to be mostly white with a few colored feathers. I had one once who was all white with one beautifully patterned copper and black feather on one of her shoulders who was spotted as a chick.

That is a nice splash! I have one growing out now.

Normally I use an auto turner and the wells in the bottom for water. But it limits my hatching. So I took out the turner, put water in a small mason jar in one corner and got some new thermometers (and placed the 'bator back in a side room instead of out in the dining area of the kitchen so it can't be disturbed like during my last hatch where it was unplugged by someone who didn't think before doing). Turning by hand is new for me, as is hatching more than 40 eggs at a time.

there's still 61 in there of my original 70. Might be fewer after tonight's candle though.
Candled. Pulled out 10 more. 6 I wasn't totally sure about on day 7 and left in there just in case, but were clears (mostly blue eggs which are so darn hard to see through). 4 early quitters. There was one question mark blue from day 7 that was totally a developing embryo today! Yay for leaving them in an additional week. DH got all freaked out when I told him there were still 50ish eggs still in there! He said we're going to be totally overrun with chickens.

I reminded him that we have a strong Asian population in our area who are keen to buy chicks in large quantities at bargain prices if I ever feel overrun. I have no doubt I can sell a large number of these chicks quickly if push came to shove. For a second there I thought maybe he was going to say I couldn't hatch for Easter, but I think he's back on board.

it is a "leghorn mix" last year I was testing how my eggs faired during shipping and I sent a package out to texas and the lady sent me a dozen eggs this year (much to my happy surprise) there were 2 EE's, 2 cochin bantams, one barred rock, and 7 mixes which she labeled as to who the hen was. 11 of the eggs made it to lockdown, and 10 hatched. not bad for shipped eggs!

Oh and they are my Pajamas lol. full length pant pajamas haha I was dying when someone suggested they were men's boxers LOL
