The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

My test hatch is hatching.  It's day 21 so they should be, but I was having such temperature and humidity issues that I wasn't sure any would make it.  I bought a new Hygro-thermometer - the difference between old and new is substantial.  Right now the old one (Incubator Warehouse, $21. plus shipping) reads Temp 59, Humid 58%.  The new one ($6.95 at Home Depot) reads Temp 99.0, Humid 73%.  I guess I'll stay with cheap in the future.

I have five chicks out and five more on the way.     :weee

Yay chicks are so much fun! :jumpy

Congrats on the Quali, angelobutter. :jumpy

There is a big crack in my incubator but luckily the place I bought if from is going to replace it, I have it less than a month. Hopefully it will be here before next Saturday so my eggs will be started on time for the Easter hatch-a-long.

For the next Emu egg hatching
Yes he is : ) and about, ehh 5 miles an hour, slow for a cheetah, fast for 4 day old chick lol.
That is fast. I hope one day you might share a short vid for us.

I can fit five in that size. I also have a big one from Costco that had Blue Berreys in it. It holds up to 9 or 10.

I line the bottom with the foam shelf liner. After the hatch, I use Lysol all purpose cleaner to sterilize the containers and toss the shelf liner into the washing machine. If I use the plastic hatching trays, they go into the dish washer.

Yes, I have a system I suppose. I will be hatching 100 SG Dorkings, 100 Delawares and the egg farmer wants me to hatch 1000 for him this year. I am working on Blue and green layers now and then Basque hens, Fogel HRIRs and possibly Bresse or Blue and Black Australorps. Next year I hope he wants the Pita Pintas. I need more of them to breed from.
I love your system. ANd wow that is a lot of eggs to hatch. Do you use anything besides the 2 hovabators?

Yep, hopefully all three

Very cool! How much space do you need to house them and for the exercise pen?

Starting with the BEAST! lol.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PICTURE!

I am using 3 Genesis 1588 hovaboators and one Brinsea 40. I set eggs each week and will be for months to come!

Kim wants to finish up her hatches before it gets up to 110 this summer. The Egg Farmer may want me to hatch until Fall.

Lots of fun!

HELP! Chick delema time... The other chicks were pecking at it's naval.

This is what I have. I already sprayed blue kote on. What is my next move?

Thanks..
all you can do is keep it separate, are you giving probotics and vitamins or grow gel?

Hatching 101 at bottom is this....

Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks
2 C. Water
2 TBL. Brown Sugar, honey or molasses
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
Mix until all dry ingredients dissolve & Keep refrigerated
You could also use electrolyte drinks Gatorade or Pedialyte, or
3 drops of POLYVISOL (liquid childrens A-B-D vitamins)
Slowly drip along inner edge of lower beak.

SEND A MESSAGE and ask that your eggs be collected and shipped in specific ways for the best hatch!!

Always in the Hatching 101 article!

The following Word File can be used when ordering shipped eggs,
it is our suggestion that you copy/paste/edit to help you get the best eggs possible. Letter written by ozexpat

Edited by bantambury - Today at 5:52 pm

Everyone is welcome to participate in the main hatch a long thread, and almost all contests have been open to all members of BYC, (unless shipping restrictions applied)

Yes, the list is of people that are setting eggs that will hatch Saturday Easter Weekend (+/- 2 days) When you said you were not hatching you were removed from the list. If you have a broody on 3/29, +/- 2 days you would be added back on the list.

This year, one of my broody hen has turned into one of those nasty girls. Until she started this behavior, I had always pooh-poohed people's reports of being pecked so hard they were afraid to take eggs from broody hens. Mine complained and "air pecked" at me, but I could easily take eggs from beneath them. Not this Priscilla of mine! She is a Silkie/BCM mix and she grabs skin and twists it! My right hand and forearm look like it belongs to a battered woman. She steals eggs from other nests too.

Just found the goose nest. Should have taken a picture; I may do so tonight. None of the 3 geesey girls are sitting on it overnight, though.
See hand picture above. I too have broodies that play nice and I can reach under them with a slight peck. But there are those that don't want you messin' with their babies!

Sneaky geese!

Sounds like a great test hatch! Now you are ready for the real deal!

If you don't have chicken vitamins, you can also use Polyvisol NO IRON.

The chick looks strong, so it should dry up and fall off on it's own.
