Just got the big order of eggs a friend wants me to hatch I am going to let them sit until friday morning so that I can include them in the easter hatch along am I correct that if I set them then they can be included?

I did not mention it, but she is going in for hip replacement and is recovering from a heart attack.

So it looks like I may have more eggs than I expected for the hatch.... have to figure out what to o with them all....

Stack them of course!  Oh, wait, you mean after they hatch?  Well don't worry about that because 1/2 won't hatch, then 1/2 of those will be males, so you really don't have that many.

I have never "stacked" eggs in my bator. Not even sure how to do that.... I will figure out what to do with them. I don't really want to turn them down b/c some of the eggs will be from Wyodott's...
Not so sure about 1/2 not hatching... I just did a hatch.. set 30 originally, 3 were clears, 2 quit early, 2 quit right before hatch time, had 23 hatch... those are pretty good percentages..
Oh well Craig's list some will go... I will also try to sell some on BYC. However, have never shipped chicks to anyone and not sure I am comfortable with it... We will see, time will tell.




In other good news, my son who hurt his ankle.. It isn't fractured! e It is although a SEVERE sprain. The Dr. Was surprised to see it still so swollen and said that it may be an indication of just how long it is going to take for it to heal. Poor kid. He hates being cooped up too. I'm going to add an image here soon.

Ok now remember this is a tween boy, please excuse his dirty toes. Lol

See the difference between his left and his right..This was done on Sunday (not the pic, that was tonight) he still has major swelling.

Ok back to chickens.... sorry... waiting for my four ducklings to hatch...getting bored..lol

I've already hatched two settings (4 survived the first one, and they're 4 weeks old now; the second had 14 and they're 2 weeks old... staggered hatches). I have 1 eggie due to hatch tomorrow, and 12 more coming out of the 'bator Friday night, for hatch on the 31st. Was wondering if I should shut it off, because I have Bourbon Red turkey eggs arriving the week of the 21st of April. Now, this! LOL! Perfect timing in getting in on the right date, and it will be empty in time for the turkey eggs! Yea!

I believe it was heart failure, not heart attack. In any event, super scary!

[SIZE=14pt]The yolk of an egg is held in place on each end by what is called Chalaza. These are delicate cords that keep the yolk centered in the egg. When you crack open an egg, you notice a white stringy thing on the yolk, this is the Chalaza. When eggs are shipped they encounter postal handlers that toss the packages, sorting machinery, bumpy vehicle rides, temperature changes and possibly X-ray Machines! So by the time the eggs get to you they are pretty much scrambled inside. So if you are going to buy eggs and have them shipped to you, be aware that the viability drops TREMENDOUSLY. There are rare instances when they ALL arrive safely but it is always a gamble.

If an egg has a normal intac t air cell PLEASE TREAT IT AS A NORMAL EGG!

For rolling, detached or disrupted air cells
(cells no longer at fat end of the egg but like a bubble level on the long side, rolling or saddle shaped cells), you’ll need to change your hatch plan. These eggs need to sit and settle to room temp 12-24 hours NO TURNING, pointy end down in a Egg Carton to possibly reattach air cells.

For SETTING in the incubator......

If your air cell is ROLLING end to end do not turn for 36-48 hours of the first incubation hours to help air cell re-attach and in some cases are really bad loose air cell should not be turned either, if after 48 hours and you have embryo growth and the air cell is still completely loose, do not turn another 24 hours.

If air cells are saddle shaped but intact (meaning not jiggly) I put them in the turner and begin with the gentle turning or you can turn by hand in the carton by simply tilting side to side, see image below.

TREATMENT AT LOCKDOWN.......
I personally have found that any shipped egg that survives to day 18 lockdown has an awkward but re-attached air cell so I lay my eggs down for hatch. Please refer to day 18 lockdown for more information on why laying eggs for hatching after day 18 is the best way to go.

I wish to Enter! I set some duck eggs in Feb but every single one hatched and died, so now I am allowed to enter. May I enter?

There were 3 ducklings that died and 3 embryos that died. The three ducklings were mixed species, 1 was a magpie, and the other 2 were fertilized by a magpie male and layed by a pekin female. So the two ducklings had no black, just white.

Tell us more, what has happened to these little duckies?
