bantambury - with a small coop, you can't really section off an area. I have a storage shelf in my coop. Feed is stored on top of the shelf, and the broody area is under the shelf.

that's a great idea!!! would the one I kept my first older chicks in work? its the one located inside of the pen.

this is the view from inside the sectioned area of my coop, to the outside in the big coop. I used this when Cadbury's flock hatched....Cadbury and pumpkin are the young'uns, and my NA gals were on the outside. it worked super well!

could I just use this and move my broody to it the night of the hatch and include a trashcan with hay as a 'coop/nestbox' area? I can always put a 'curtain' of wood in from and beside the trashcan to provide privacy....just prop the wood on the outside of the area and nail it in.

would the hen and chicks be harmed by pests?

OR I could try this old quail pen of my neighbors.....he is always offering it to me when I need....but I don't relly trust it for chicks.

(these were my old missed BA gals)

Then again I can always take chicken wire and attach it from the ground to coop top, and just let the broody have the entire coop. its warm enough out for the other two hens and Cadbury to stay on their roosts outside....

question for ya......are these girls quarantined from other flock members or no? if not do they live with a few other hens and a rooster?

my hen is broody again and I want to set eggs under her soon......the last time I hatched with a broody I left her in my coop with all the other australorps she lived with.....then once the chicks hatched the other birds attacked the chicks including the mom......I don't know why.

I want to beable to leave my broody in her coop with 2 other girls and a roo.

I use a large bottomless cage and set over mom and hatching chicks. I set up chick appropriate food and water in the cage and she'll take care of them in there until they are old enough to go out with her....that's what works well for my set up. Sometimes, I have also moved mom and babies into a cage in a different area if needed and that works out fine as well.

We are rebuilding a chicken coop this year since it was originally built to only house maybe 10 chickens but then I kept getting more cause I found other breeds I like, so we will be building a new coop and better securing the pen (and enlarging it) and will be recycling the old coop as a brooder coop/ duck house. I have 4 barred rock chicks and 2 pekin ducklings all ready for spring to get here already! Can't wait to bring them outside finally!

We have not used it as for a broody hen but can if we wanted....We have a plastic dog house which we placed into a movable covered pen. We lined the bottom of the house with straw and it has a 6 ft run. It was originally setup for our 2 bantam cochin roos. (They went missing...we believe our neighbor let them out on purpose...buttheads.) Anyway we are currently housing two Rhodebar roosters in it. It would make a great setup for a broody. I would maybe add a curtain for her to have some privacy.
