The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Woke up this morning and noticed that all the clocks were blinking. I guess we lost power last night during the storm that passed through. I'm not sure how long it was out for, and when I checked on the eggs the temp was reading as it should. If the temps dropped low enough for long enough to affect the eggs, how long before I would be able to see evidence of that? And would it look like a blood ring or something of that sort, or would it just not have any progress of development from the last time I candled? I've thankfully never had the power go out when incubating eggs before so I'm not quite sure what to look for.

On a happier note, I just found out my husband and I are expecting a little "chick" of our own! I guess this one is being "set" just in time for the Christmas 2014 Hatch-a-long!! lol Thank goodness I don't have to manually adjust/watch the temp and humidity for the next 9 months for this one!

UUUUMMMMMM so now my layer is broody.....and I have someone wanting her eggs for the cinco de mayo hatch. 2 broodies at the same time.

I need a method to break a broody fast! HELP!

I decided to pick up some eggs in a BYC auction or at by breeder's for marshie.....hopefully on Monday or Tuesday at the latest if it all works out.

funny thing.....fight now marshie is sitting on two gold balls and a rock.

I was good at TSC . I did see some little blue feathered footed bantams that I thought about getting. Ok several times lol. But not sure of what they were. I would like to find some hatching eggs to some barred cochin- large or bantam if anyone knows of some. Hint hint

OK, if it's not too late to get in this...I currently have three broody girls, first set is due to start hatching tomorrow. The girls kind of set my schedule. The third batch of 5 should work fine for the hatch-a-long. This is the first time I've ever tried. Only had the birds for a year. Can't hardly believe how nervous and anxious I feel for these hens!

question for ya......are these girls quarantined from other flock members or no? if not do they live with a few other hens and a rooster?

my hen is broody again and I want to set eggs under her soon......the last time I hatched with a broody I left her in my coop with all the other australorps she lived with.....then once the chicks hatched the other birds attacked the chicks including the mom......I don't know why.

I want to beable to leave my broody in her coop with 2 other girls and a roo.

6 Hatched so far..... 4 more are pipped and ready to zip. 1 died in its shell (So saddening)... 4 more were set a day later so those will probably be later tonight or tomorrow (im assuming... but not counting them till they hatch) The one with the umbilical issue fixed itself (it dried up and fell off, thank you for your guidance in that matter). I had to put a small "Fence" in my incubator as the hatching chicks were rolling my HAL eggs for me... which is fine but one of them nearly bulldozed the eggs out when I went to transfer the dry ones to the Brooder!!! I hatched a little tank!!!! haha!

Aweeee Baby Chicks are so CUTE!!! <3

I leave my broodies in the coop they live in. I let them sit where they choose to sit. Then, when the chicks hatch, I move her that night with her babies to a private area of the coop. It's still within sight of the rest of the flock, but I can close it off for a week and let the babies get on their feet well. Then when they are all strong and eating/drinking well, I let them out with the flock. I too have had chicks killed in nest box fights, etc, and I've found this method works well for me.
