The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Woke up this morning and noticed that all the clocks were blinking. I guess we lost power last night during the storm that passed through. I'm not sure how long it was out for, and when I checked on the eggs the temp was reading as it should. If the temps dropped low enough for long enough to affect the eggs, how long before I would be able to see evidence of that? And would it look like a blood ring or something of that sort, or would it just not have any progress of development from the last time I candled? I've thankfully never had the power go out when incubating eggs before so I'm not quite sure what to look for.

On a happier note, I just found out my husband and I are expecting a little "chick" of our own! I guess this one is being "set" just in time for the Christmas 2014 Hatch-a-long!! lol Thank goodness I don't have to manually adjust/watch the temp and humidity for the next 9 months for this one!

How wonderful! Blessings for you at Christmas time!

Look what we had happen!

She could have been part of the EHAL but I didn't think she was serious. Took eggs away from her every day Mon - Thurs. She very sweetly warmed an empty bucket all week. So I humored her and put six fresh, carefully chosen eggs, under her. She chuckled and fluffed and has warmed them too. Then the kids got excited and there are a few heinz 57 under her too. She's a LF Brahma so who knows how many eggs she can hide! She is so sweet. She just kind of puffs and chuckles. Nothing like the chainsaw murderer shrieks that our last broody emitted every time she saw a shadow!

@mlmddh.... LOL... I always outfish my husband!

It drives him crazy, but he is proud of me and brags to his buddies. The other wives do not fish. I do make offering to the "Fish Gods". My DH laughs... but it works for me.

I think it was CackleJoy that suggested the outfish him, I would have no problem with my wife out fishing me.

I hear ya!! Rumples makes the chainsaw murder shrieks. You don't DARE mess with her eggs!

Well...Rumples jumped off the nest to eat, so I ran outside a gently lifted 2 eggs. I brought them in the house to candle and saw nothing. I think the shells are too thick. My flashlight says 250 on the side of it, but I am not sure if that is the lumens. I can see something from one of my fridge egg that Si laid, but it is light blue. Oh well... at least none of them were smelly.

Quote: Well, I could send you some barnevelder eggs. Many people have Wyandottes, polish and silkies. I believe cjexotic has show quality silkies - I don't have silkies, but I've seen his and they look great! Also Sonoran Silkies has very nice silkies looking too. I don't know of anyone with Sebrights or Japanese bantams.

Quote: Ditto.

I'm off to a somewhat disappointing start to my Easter hatch. Today is day 10, and I recandled. I removed 7 eggs, 6 with no development, and 1 with a definite blood ring. Of the 11 eggs left in the bator, there are 3 that look questionable. There are 2 that are just difficult to see, and 1 that I'm still pretty sure has a blood ring. The other veins haven't disappeared yet though, so I'm leaving it in just in case the blood ring turns out to be a large blood vessel.

Sadly, the eggs I removed were my all of my BLRW and Blue Orp. :( I guess they just didn't survive the shipping as well as the other breeds.
Hopefully some hatch for you!

Ok, its my day 5 but I could not resist candling. It is my first hatch so I decided to check on the mini Brinsea which has 7 eggs. I could only see dark shadows about 1 inch in diameter in all 7 but no veins. 6 of these are dark brown eggs and 1 light blue. Do I need to worry or its just my inexperience or bad LED light? I wasn't able to identify any air sac either.
Air sac will be small at this point. Dark shadows are good. It's much harder to see veining in dark brown and blue eggs. I just look for the dark mass in the egg.

I have 4 chicks hatched... technically 5. one is still in the incubator drying/fluffing... however its dragging around a piece of the membrane (maybe?) It looks to be attached to where the belly button is.... but there is No yolk to be seen anywhere. Is this normal? Will it fall off? help!! Happy Chooks... Sally Sunshine?! AnyOne!? I need my saviors! haha

It's an unabsorbed yolk sac. They can rupture it and not to scare you, but I've had one rupture it and bleed out. Make sure they are on something soft, not the wire bottom of the incubator. Or you can put the chick in a cup so it can't move around much until it dries up. It should dry up and fall off on it's own.

My in between clutch are on day 20 and I think I have a pip! I can't see a beak yet though. Just a cracked surface in the egg, right near my x from lockdown.

What a good girl! She could cover A LOT of eggs!
