I would really like to see the video- not to sound weird or anything- just an interesting take on behavior indicators. What breed are they?So um, guys/gals? One of my 4 day old chicks attempted to crow today.
Also, a couple days ago I saw what I thought was one trying to mount another chick. It kinda ran up behind the other like it was trying to do 'the thing' but was confused with its own actions. I told my DH & he said it was probably just a random action that looked like an attempt. I have the latter captured on video, but not posted online.
Anyone experience this? It's completely new to me. I have heard of chicks trying to crow at a few weeks, but not at 4 days..
Maybe it's something I'm feeding them? or just my rooster's genetics. This is the first batch I've had from my roo & hens.

They are Bantam Silver-Laced Wyandottes. My rooster REALLY likes to breed a lot & he's very Roostery, if that makes sense.I would really like to see the video- not to sound weird or anything- just an interesting take on behavior indicators. What breed are they?
That's it! I just came in for the day & refreshed their food. When I put the dish down one of them gargled out a crow - sounding like a weird cricket. It was very cute but I stood there kinda like "whaaa". It was just so unexpected.Yes! I had one crow at 2 days! I thought, no, I'm imagining things. So when it happened again, usually when I surprised them by coming into the room, it would crow. So, I sat quietly and I just watched until they were all going about their busisness. I slapped the floor and watched. That little thing stretched out it's neck and did it's funny little crow. Now I knew which one it was.It did it for about a week.
Personally, when I retired from IT several years ago, I switched to Macs and remain blissfully unaware of Microsoft and the Windows operating system.I have been replacing XP Computers for a couple of months. If possible, upgrade to Windows 7. Microsoft is giving XP users a free license to a program called laplink the works fairly well for moving the user.
You will have some time but should stop using XP for Financial transactions. Browser caches and history should be cleared too. That should be something yo do all the time on any computer though.
Quote: Ladycluck - Leghorns have really large combs. I'd expect it to be larger in the first picture if it were a cockerel. I think it's a pullet. Black sex link is absolutely a cockerel.
PAchickenlover - the sex is determined by the hen when the egg is laid. So no, temps do not play a role in what sex. They can however kill off the pullets and thus you hatch more of the males.

Well in just full of AMAZING news this morning! All 4 Ancona's have embryos. Both of the normal eggs have externally pipped. We went ahead a opened Opps's shell but don't see a bill so we put it back for now. And the 24 more Ancona's I ordered came in with 2 extras but one was busted. They will go in tomorrow and then I will pick up an unknown amount of an unknown kinds of eggs at the post office.Congrats!![]()
Great news on shipped eggs! If I had a basement, I would so have chicks in it!Finished candling everything last night. Out of the 49 eggs set, 36 remain in the bator this morning. I'm pretty pleased with this ratio since they were shipped eggs. Developing eggs include 9 Khaki Campbell, 6 Black East Indies, 10 Calls, and 11 Bresse. Not included in the HAL, I have 85 Dorking and RIR in 2 other bators and 15 Isbar and 12 Rhodebar resting to be set tonight. Somebody stop me before I convert the basement and spare bedroom into coops! By the way, anyone have Red Bourbon turkey eggs? LOL
It depends on how high up the pecking order your broody is. If she's pretty high up, then she'll stay put and the others will lay around her. If she's low on the pecking order, they could peck her until she vacates the spot. She'll return when they are done laying.Oh my gosh, I think I'm going to pull my hair out!! I've got five hens who refuse to lay eggs anywhere but in the one corner of our community nest box, and my broody hen who refuses to sit on eggs anywhere else. So today I go in and check on her, and one of the other hens has apparently decided she is no longer going to tolerate the broody hogging the spot. So this is what was going on:![]()
Another picture, which I took with my good camera and I don't know how to upload here, is of her sitting directly on the broody hen's back! So I got her off and locked her out of the coop, and boy is she. Why won't she pick a different place to lay???![]()
