Is there a trick to hatching shipped Turkey eggs? I have been told they have a lower hatch rate than shipped chicken eggs but was expecting more than zero - I have set 37 from two different shippers and had one develop and not hatch, the rest did nothing at all. They had loose air cells, I set them in a non-turning Brinsea the first 5 days, then moved them to a Sportsman.
With loose air sacs, you don't want to turn them for 5 days or so in hopes that the air sac will reattach. Sounds like they were jostled around too much in transit, or not packed well enough. When you candled them, was the yolk intact? They could have been scrambled, and if so, nothing would develop.

I can't stand it! Just found this and I'm already 150 posts behind? Does anyone know when we should set Turkey eggs?

For those who are interested in Turkeys, if this hatch is followed by the Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon, where we're all about gobblers but welcome anyone hatching anything! There are folks on that thread who may be able to offer turkey eggs for this hatch, so pop in!
I might be finished hatching by then as it's getting really warm here already. But just in case the weather holds or I really need to do one more batch.....

If nothing else maybe I can get the extra bator set up to do the hatch at work by then; that will be fun; I work with people with developmental disabilities and have been planning to do a hatch with them for awhile. So I might be running two hatches; will have to wait and see how things pan out.

I've been hatching BCM but having a lot of clears from one pen and dead in shells from both. ;-( not positive what's the issue; am rechecking everything but nothing is coming up really wrong.

The English Orp girl might be laying by then or I might still be hatching buff rocks. Again, will have to wait and see.

Whenever lots of chicks don't pip and die in-shell, I always decrease the humidity by 20%. This can be caused by inadequate evaporation, so the chick is too large to maneuver to proper pipping position. Good luck!

I think you had rotten luck, perhaps. I've had about 30% hatch rate with shipped Turkey eggs.

Years ago, the late BYC peafowl guru, Deerman, shipped me pea eggs in the most clever method I ever saw: he used styrofoam coffee cups in 2 sizes, bent in to cradle the eggs and then one cup inverted in the next size up. I wish I'd taken pics. I think this would be a wonderful way to ship turkey eggs, too!

(Still miss you, Burt!! Ducky & Ursula are still doing great!!)

Maybe placing a local Craigslist Wanted ad ? I've had a lot of success doing that. They will make you place the ad in the Wanted section, since you're not selling, but I add a ton of "Keywords" to the bottom of my post, so that anyone searching for poultry related topics will be directed to it. Like this:

Tags : Poultry, livestock, goats, eggs, chickens, roosters, ducks, geese, etc.

OH how wonderful! I wish you the best of luck! Whats hatching? updates updates please!!! and why wouldnt it operate!!!
I lust for your Brahmas,

What's hatching? The eggs in the incubator are Buff Brahma large fowl, Buckeye, Silver Penciled Wyandotte and mixed flock from my egg barn mostly just to test the incubator.

Why won't it operate? I learned a long time ago that I am not in control of what happens, I am more patient if I go into any project very flexible.

updates to follow...........................

Thanks! ocap! The brahma seems to be a favorite besides the WFBS!
Everyone is wanting the Splash Partridge Brahma coloring so I will have to AGAIN reconfigure my pens! But not until spring <tapping fingers>
