Ok so I want you good peoples opinion on something. I'm thinking of trying to order some eggs from Dick Horstman for the hatch-a-long. I'm not sure if they're available but if you had to choose between White Araucana Bantams and Silver Laced Polish Bantams which would you order? They both look awesome and if I had the money I'd by a dozen of both but alas...

Hmmm...dilemna....maybe he would do 6 & 6. Just a thought, but I hear he's really great and has awesome birds!

I so wanted to hatch in the Easter hatch a long, but something got into my coop and got 7 of my chickens only leaving me with 3 boys & 3 girls, they're all beat up pretty bad. So I took all the eggs that were in the coop and put them in the incubator. I hope I can get some out of them. They were out in the cold, so we'll see. Good Luck Everyone!!!

Sounds like they'll be hatching just in time to have an empty bator for set day. Throw some shipped eggs in there...

Here's my plug for BHep...I got some awesome Serama eggs from her 2 years ago, hatched out 8/15. Impressive on shipped Serama eggs, beautiful birds too.

I am in York. Looking for some hatching eggs for the hatch a long. My few old girls aren't laying much at all. Last year almost none of them were fertile. Can anyone help?

Is there any thing specific you are looking for?

Would love some speckled Sussex but would love to set a colorful batch of eggs also. So I guess you could say I almost don't care, I just wanna hatch some lil fuzballs. Lol

I also love them. I have five right now but they are older birds and are not laying much anymore. I really would like to replace them. Not that I want to cull the birds I have because I don't. They're pets now. Even my old rooster is a great guy to be around! Please, please does anyone have any SS eggs????

DARN IT! I keep trying to inport a photo of the emu egg that I set yesterday, and my computer just wont let me. (soooo annoying) I think it might be out of space

BUT I WILL POST A PHOTO LOL.

P.S. I have just three days until I can wiggle check one of the emu eggs that has been in the incubator before this one.!!

i bought from two seperate ebayers. I have set up buy it nows with requested ship dates on many occaisions.

yesterday was day 21 with chicken eggs.

no pips.

destructive test was done on 4 of 30 eggs since I had difficulty understanding what I was seeing on the day 7 candle.

one of the four had a developing live chick.

went back and reread "Hatching 101"

question: What would be your next step in determining why the eggs go to day 23-25 to develop and hatch?

I don't know about why, but I know how to tell w/o opening the shell whether the chick is still alive.
There's the float test.
Also, I incubated eggs and I candled them and then transferred them (checking for development, etc.) I noticed that the ones that weren't developing got cold fast and the ones that had live chicks in them stayed warm outside of the incubator. IDK what the time frame is, but it's the same idea as the emu egg advice given back several pages, if the chick is alive and large enough to generate its own heat, then the egg will stay warm, if the chick is either too small or not alive, the egg will go cold quicker.
One answer I know is temperature; if the temp isn't warm enough, the chick will develop more slowly.
Another answer is that larger eggs/breeds take a little longer to develop. A friend of mine has Jersey Giants, and she said they always hatch on day 23 w/o fail, every single time.
