The plug to my Genesis sits on the windowsill by my sink. Always. Am I supposed to use it for something?
No, I do not use it but it is not needed at all if you live at a high altitude. It is ok to have low ventilation for the first week or so but is bad when the chicks start needing oxygen.

I have staggered hatches going 10 months of the year so I can't keep the plugs closed ever.

The third most common cause of chicks not hatching is poor ventilation. It is one of the Basic three things that we need to watch.

I was asking because new research and studies come up that change methods and recommendations.

Hi i just got a lg its week one and i lost three with blood rings. This is my first hatch ever.

How many eggs did you set and were they shipped?

If so, watch the rest of the eggs, you are getting into the place where micro cracks can cause seeping.

Just wanted to give everyone an update looks like I will be in Colorado for a while. My Foster Dad is very ill he had a blood order that they were treating that has sense turned into leukemia it was affecting his lungs and his blood marrow but they had gotten it under control but unfortuantly the treatment did not keep it out of his brain and he now has a lesion on his brain. We found all this out because he fell on tuesday he was not found right away when he fell right away and as a result aspirated and has pneumonia now. We are now waiting for the pneumonia to clear up so that he can be taken off the respirator after he is taken off the respirator we will then decide whether or not to start radiation on the lesion. This is a very stressful time I am not sure what the future holds all I can do is sit and wait and pray. On a different note the 100 eggs I locked down before I left on wed. are ow hatching my daughter is taking excellent care of them and so far there are 37 healthy chicks there were three chicks that were weak when I left from the previous hatch and unfortuantly they did pass away but I know that we can not save them all. TY for all you kind words, thoughts and prayers and I will keep you posted.

We lost a bird recently and have been keeping all poultry locked in runs, only free ranging when we're outside with them. Well....they were out ALL day yesterday by accident, I fully expected to lose birds as I couldn't be home. But lucky us, my Bella was on the job, we lost no birds and I caught a shot of her chasing off what I think is a red tailed hawk.

I will agree with others, good dog!

I am at high altitude, have actually considered getting an oxygen machine for the "nursery" LOL - for now just run a humidifier in there.

I went ahead and candled my eggs that finally came. There were only two that had rolling air sacs. There are a few with real .. ahem..nice...saddle air sacs.
I went ahead and opened the two that had the rolling. One no doubt, fertile. Couldn't find the spot on the other. Who knows. I may get a few.

Check out this funky egg I got today!!
I thought it was a homemade roll that got burned on one end. Poor chicken! That Had to have been uncomfortable...
Thought this was interesting,,, 3 days ago the veins in this call duck egg disintegrated into a cloudy mess. Embryo was still alive. Checked yesterday..embryo still alive. Today embryo still alive. WTHeck is keeping it alive? I know it will eventually succumb but this is strange.
How can you tell that it's still alive?
