Reyvaughn I've been using those this year too, and I like them - they will make an indentation in the leg if you don't change soon enough, but much more forgiving than zip ties.

The last chick is out!

The chick is not sticky, the feet look good. It is on it's stomach and moving around normally. No Wry neck either!

I do have pictures of some of them from this afternoon. I have 20ish from this hatch. They are Blue genetica so I have Blue, Splash and Black. The UofA X Crele Pene OEs are either black or black with a white spot. This time It looks like I have a blue one with a white spot!

Ok my fellow hatchers, I need advice.

Since I'm hatching so many different types of chicks, I need a way to identify them (with 60 eggs, I won't remember which chick is what breed, etc.) I tried using zip ties last year but I wasn't happy with them...especially when I had to snip them off because of getting tight on chick's leg. So I want to get leg bands, but I don't know if what I want are even made.

I want a type of leg band that will expand as the chick grows so that I don't have to keep changing them. Is anything like this available??

IF NOT, how do I know what size leg bands to buy? When I looked online, they always had sizes, and I have no idea what sizes i would need!

BTW, since at least half of my chicks will be black, I can't use food coloring to put a dot on heads.

Spiral leg bands will work, but any leg band you will have to change out as they grow. Also, I've used ones that clip shut, and I like those too. I can use the ones with clips by myself, the spirals are harder to get off by yourself.

Quick question...

I have always done smaller hatches so opening the little lids on the top of my LG, didn't allow for too much heat loss.

With having the bator maxed out this time, will it hurt to remove the whole lid to candle? Some are hard to reach otherwise.

No, broodies get off the nest too. It's fine for the eggs to cool while you candle.

Howdy y'all. Discovered why my little silkie rooster has been sluggish and sicky. Mites. Tiny little yellow mites and eggs covering the base if all the feathers on his head and neck. I kinda freaked. Bathed and blow dried and dusted the crap out of him with DE (all I had ....) obsessively checked everyone else and their coops and dusted the DICKENS out everyone and everything. He's isolated cuz he's not looking good at all and I didn't find any on anyone else. Is that weird?

Small yellowish bugs and eggs on the base of feathers sounds like LICE, not mites to me. We have more trouble with lice in the winter because they love chewing the dead feather bits when the chickens are molting, and also when there is not as much access to dust bath areas. Plus they live on the chickens so they can survive through freezing weather better than the mites, who only feed on the chickens at night.

I have had good results using Eucalyptus Essential oil, or Lemon Eucalyptus oil if you can find it, to kill the lice and egg clusters. Dilute the Eucalyptus oil in olive oil, about 3-5 drops of EO to 1 TBS of Olive oil, and mix. Then use a dropper to put the oil all over any egg sacks at the base of the chicken's feathers and also on any live lice you see. It is probably best to do this at night when the chickens are sleepy. Then check them again in about a week and repeat if necessary. Bonus feature is that your coop will smell WONDERFUL the next morning!
