Reyvaughn I've been using those this year too, and I like them - they will make an indentation in the leg if you don't change soon enough, but much more forgiving than zip ties.

Quote: I agree, they can really fool you. If you are unsure about an egg, leave it in the bator! Put a ? on it. Then candle again at day 18.
Quote: 102 is just .5 degrees off what it should be. I watch mine cycle - The heater comes on at 100 and off at 102.5 and my hatches are fine. It is the internal temperature of the egg that is important. You want to aim for 101.5 in a still air incubator.
Cuties, congrats Ron! These are ones you get to keep? The last chick is out!
The chick is not sticky, the feet look good. It is on it's stomach and moving around normally. No Wry neck either!
I do have pictures of some of them from this afternoon. I have 20ish from this hatch. They are Blue genetica so I have Blue, Splash and Black. The UofA X Crele Pene OEs are either black or black with a white spot. This time It looks like I have a blue one with a white spot!

Brown means that the chick is stuck. It will not be able to get out on it's own. You will need to get a warm, wet washcloth and carefully peel away the shell. If you encounter blood, STOP and put it back in the bator and wait before trying again.
Quote: Awwww, there's those adorable ducklings again!
Yup!If an egg has veins on day 11 it's alive correct?
Spiral leg bands will work, but any leg band you will have to change out as they grow. Also, I've used ones that clip shut, and I like those too. I can use the ones with clips by myself, the spirals are harder to get off by yourself.Ok my fellow hatchers, I need advice.
Since I'm hatching so many different types of chicks, I need a way to identify them (with 60 eggs, I won't remember which chick is what breed, etc.) I tried using zip ties last year but I wasn't happy with them...especially when I had to snip them off because of getting tight on chick's leg. So I want to get leg bands, but I don't know if what I want are even made.
I want a type of leg band that will expand as the chick grows so that I don't have to keep changing them. Is anything like this available??
IF NOT, how do I know what size leg bands to buy? When I looked online, they always had sizes, and I have no idea what sizes i would need!
BTW, since at least half of my chicks will be black, I can't use food coloring to put a dot on heads.
TYIA!!!
No, broodies get off the nest too. It's fine for the eggs to cool while you candle.Quick question...![]()
I have always done smaller hatches so opening the little lids on the top of my LG, didn't allow for too much heat loss.
With having the bator maxed out this time, will it hurt to remove the whole lid to candle? Some are hard to reach otherwise.

Howdy y'all. Discovered why my little silkie rooster has been sluggish and sicky. Mites. Tiny little yellow mites and eggs covering the base if all the feathers on his head and neck. I kinda freaked. Bathed and blow dried and dusted the crap out of him with DE (all I had ....) obsessively checked everyone else and their coops and dusted the DICKENS out everyone and everything. He's isolated cuz he's not looking good at all and I didn't find any on anyone else. Is that weird?
Welcome back! It took @NotAFarm an evening and part the morning to catch on about 650 posts.Just stopping in to say hi. Been a busy few weeks and I am 1309 posts behind.![]()
