I have good news and bad news.

Bad news: I swapped my 3 homegrown duck eggs into my styrobator to use the Brinsea as a hatcher for my 3 chicken eggs in lockdown.. Bad idea. They'd have been better off in the extreme humidity.. Although the temp and humidity are reading perfect in the styrobator, there's just something wrong. The ducks were alive and kicking (little webbed feet against the shell!) when I put them in a few days ago, but I candled tonight and I'm 99% certain the styrobator killed them. :hit It's going to be so sad doing eggtopsies...almost fully developed ducklings...my first duck eggs...and babies from my own ducks..
Also, since we're on bad news, it's confirmed that all 10 of my quail were early quitters. Guess what incubator they were in...

Good news: I don't have another 0% hatch!! Thank God! Although they're a little late, 2 of the 3 chicken eggs hatched tonight! Not sure about the 3rd yet..it was alive at lockdown, but still no activity, so I'll try candling tomorrow if it doesn't do anything tonight.

The first out was the silkie egg I was really praying was a showgirl. Well, not a showgirl, but I'm not too upset--it's still adorable! And my first hatch in months, although I've had the incubators going constantly! Lucky little stinker. It's a white silkie (pure silkie) out of a buff hen and white?red?black? roo.

:love

Then came this little one. He/she is out of a blue egg almost certainly from my EE hen (only other possibility is a Naked Neck hen that I don't think is laying yet). There's a lot of roos running out there with her, but the only ones I know are "active" are a big Buff Brahma, a white silkie, a black silkie, and a Salmon Faverolle bantam. Of those, the buff Brahma is the head honcho, so it's likely his. No feathered legs, though. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Excuse the bad pictures. My iPod camera quality is crap anyways, but the inside of the bator is covered in dust and down, so it's hard to see through.
Now the impatient waiting for them to fluff out!

For the record, I started with 18 eggs total, and, while there's still a small possibility of more, it looks like my total is going to be 2/18. Which is what (terrible at math)...10-11% hatch? Better than 0!

Huzzah! If you get a clean necked sg all the babies will be sgs!

Congratulations cythhia!

I'd love to get my hands on some clean-necked sgs!! Heck, I'll take any sgs I can get right now. I've been looking everywhere but can't find any! They're my favorite breed, but I only have one hen and one roo. I have plenty of Naked Necks and nice silkies, though, so I was going to work on my own crosses while I look for more nice sgs. :)

Only 5 of the 40ish in lockdown, no new pips or talkers in the last 24 hours. Going to break lockdown to pull the temp/humidity logger and try and see what went wrong in detail. Horribly disappointing hatch, but will keep it up until day 25 in case there are later hatchers somehow. I am hating these styro incubators these last hatches - and they had done so well last year :/

i just spent the last 45 minutes with a dying baby chick. holding her and keeping her comfortable. I noticed something was wrong when she was layig down sleeping and didn't flinch or wake when the others pecked at her toes. I picked her up and she was limp. She died in my hands and threw up yellow foam before taking her last breath. So sad :-(

I am so sorry about your chick. Yellow stuff means infection?
