Same here, I would never move the entire incubator to another room just for candling its not worth the possibility of having an accident while carrying them. I just wait till dark and candle then.

Congrats on the spiders! I might candle tomorrow but my plan is to wait till day 10. I don't want to handle them too much.
The candler I am using even works during daytime with lights on except for some very dark eggs.

Blue sky...82° this afternoon...Sorry...no chicks yet...this is Northern CA...

Howdy neighbor! Welcome to BYC!

For pecan syrup you only need some whole pecans to make the syrup.

You just crack a double handful open and fill a pot with water crack into the nuts and drop into the water and boil till the water is the dark red of the inside of the pecans. *Note: strain the nuts and shells out of the water when the liquid has the right color and should smell like pecans*
Then for every cup of fluid you add 2 & 1/2 cups sugar and boil at a slow rolling boil till it is as thick as syrup pour into jars and can in a water batch canner for 10 min. it's as easy as jam.

Forgot to mention to strain the liquid. lol
Mmmm...thanks for the receipe!

All of you are making me jealous with all of this syrup talk. Us CA folks don't get to experience this. I get my pure maple syrup from the store, and it's darn expensive!
Yep, but I'll pay for the syrup if it means I don't have to shovel snow!

Anyone ever have an egg stuck in the egg turner?

Yes usually impossible to remove without breaking

What I did was remove all the other eggs, carried the turner to the compost pile and took it out there, then thoroughly cleaned it.

reading some of the posts,

it appears that some are changing total eggs set with every mishap or candle,

is that what the judges want?
Quote:
I dont think so...i think they were wanting iur original amount and then number of chicks hatching. It wouldnt be too fair if we change our number after every clear found.

@Happy Chooks ?
Good point. I've seen this before.
The eggs one sets on set day, or whenever they start should be the number set. We all have infertiles and fails but those count against our success percentages.

Yikes, maybe I should just wait until lockdown when I take out the turner?
See above, not worth trying to take out inside the incubator.

CC, try this if you want for the cough:
1 tsp cinnamon to 6-8 oz boiling water in mug let steep.
Add 2 tbsp raw honey after water cools a bit, (do not add to boiling water)
You can also add lemon or acv
I'm glad you are feeling a little better.
I'm trying it now. Thanks.

It's that post nasal drip thing and the resulting congestion. Gross, I know, sorry.

I have tried, tried, and tried everything possible to get good hatches with that bator. Nothing works. I sold my 9300 on craigslist for $10 and apologized to the person who bought it.
I then "upgraded" to the 10300 forced air model. It has a pretend fan.
The only thing the digital little giants could possibly be used for is an emergency floation device in case of flooding
That's funny but I kinda agree. I'd rather pay another $10 or so and have a thermostat that's stable. I've fried lots of eggs with those.

NOOOOOOOO! It all makes sense now! The bator I lost 100+ eggs to over the past 3 months is THIS one. I got 2 chicks out of all of it. The lady I borrowed it from could not get anything to hatch over sever. Tries. I guess getting 2 chicks is good.

I now have the HOVA incubator 1602N thermal air. I am still losing a lot of eggs.

Whenever one has problems with a fairly good incubator, the first 2 recommendations are a guaranteed accurate thermometer and a look at breeder nutrition.

The other night, my husband and I were trying to say the word rural. Go ahead - do it. Say the word rural out loud without sounding like an animal. It was so funny to the both of us. Possibly because we were exhausted. But really, it is funny. Rural is such a horrible word to say - but now I just giggle every time I think about it. And we just say it randomly to each other and start laughing. LOL. Our teenagers think we're crazy.
Rural is the only word I couldn't say when I was a kid. Now it sounds close to what it is supposed to but that has taken a half a century.

I also was thinking--the funky bators that are not reliable would be good enough to warm up new eggs to add to the "other bator" for staggered hatches....that way the new eggs don't drop the temp of the "already incubating eggs" when added...
That's what I use them for. It's a good idea to pre warm eggs even if there are no other egg to be added to.

Happy spring or vernal equinox.
I am using one from Magicfly. Only downside is that it does not work with batteries, so needs an extra power outlet close to the incubator

Thanks

Well... put a dozen duck eggs in the incubator today. Here's hoping for the best. Poor duck must've been drowned by her boyfriend.

Bad boyfriend

The key with the 1602N is tiny adjustments. You likely have temperature issues. Get an accurate thermometer. The other thing it could be is humidity, did you calibrate your hygrometer?

Quote: I've been that way these last couple of days but I can't wait until day 10. I'm going in tomorrow afternoon, even though I didn't set until 10:30pm Saturday. What are the advantages of waiting an extra (long) 3 days?

Not sure if it is advantageous or not, more like a preference.
I don't like handling them more than necessary. I am using an LG styro incubator so don't like to keep it open for too long the first 8 days or so. I hand turn so it is open three times a day for the time it take me to turn 41 eggs. By 10 days, it is clear what is developing for sure and I can remove anything that is not.
.....and handling can equal

Well, had a friend bring me some eggs..he wasn't too sure how good his roo was, as he just started crowing. Evidently, this roo only likes one of his girls. The three out of 12 that aren't clear is from the same hen. All other 9 are clear as clear. Won't be my bator's fault or mine, you have to have fertile eggs for them to hatch...yep!
I have found that to be soo true with hatched eggs when I want to blame the shipping..I've tried again thinking it was...when the eggs kept showing clear, I finally got smart..don't order from that person again. If you are ordering eggs from e-bay..well, anywhere...make sure you read the follow up comments!
I did order this time from the same gal that I ordered from for the NYD hatch a long. I had 7 out of 8 hatch. They were all developing right from the start. This time, 7 developed, one didn't. Very clear. The air cells looked better last time, I have a couple that are pretty high in hers this time. Will see what happens, but I know I can count on getting fertile eggs..even the ones with high air cells have started. Veining very good.
