It was warm yesterday and okay this morning but then the storm came to Colorado.

Hey! We supposed to get some of that. Not.

Don't get me wrong I love the warm weather and I feel bad for all you guys in the snow. But my poor chickens in the heat... I am setting about opposite of most of you in I get eggs all winter and my girls go on break in the heat of the summer. Last year it got 110° for a week straight.

You might want to look into getting some Penedesencas they to not stop laying eggs in the heat and they lay very dark eggs.

Two of my partridge penedesenca breeding pullets for this year:

They are inside these eggs here.

Penedesencas are ultra heat hardy.

I have a few australorps as well. I think it maybe their age as well. They were late spring hatches so most didn't even start laying until it go cold. This HAL will be the earliest I've ever had chicks. I usually don't get them until may. So these girls may just turn into summer layers.

An hour, that is amazing. I need to pay you to build me one that is divided into hatching sections. I only have need of a hatcher right now and it would take me so many hours to just find and order the parts online let alone trying to get it all together correctly.

I'm not kidding, you can expect to hear from me as soon as I find a reasonable sized used wine cooler for under $75, not an 8 bottle cooler but something that could easily have 4 shelves large enough for 20- 30 eggs each.

Someday maybe there will be a way to help spread the wealth of desired weather.

For the cooler bators that stand on their sides so they are taller, what size coolers are best?

Next for those asking about pre-made incubators, little giant has a digital updated still air out. With all of its add-ons, fan, turner, ... it is still on the cheap side at:

And for a bit more money and a bit less space, there is the plastic Rite Farm bator: http://www.coopsnmore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1947

And for a great view of hatching and plastic incubator warehouse has a nice clear top incubator but it costs more.

I have two Incuviews and I like them a lot. I have turned the heat down one degree on both of them, but I've had almost no trouble with them at all. I say almost because my house is so dry right now, I had a little trouble with humidity, but once it stabilized, it's been rock steady. My newest one is on it's maiden voyage right now, and it did spike to 102, briefly. I turned the heat down and it's stayed pretty consistent since. I have 19 eggs in the first one, due to hatch Sunday. There's 14 in the newer one, due to hatch 6 days after the first. I'll post pics if anyone is interested.

A couple of questions for when you get time.

Is the door hard to open with the cooler standing up?
Should I plan on adding a latch of some kind to keep the door tightly closed? I'd probably need a latch to keep the children out but if the door stays closed tightly maybe not.

How did you make the windows? can you see all of the eggs from the windows or would I need to try to make the windows one long window.

How many eggs will fit on a shelf? I hatch upright so maybe think ho many egg cartons will fit on a shelf.
Lastly besides the hardware cloth, what is needed to make the shelves?
