This is exactly why I don't like to do huge batches of eggs. I know I am not capable of giving a bazillion chicks the time, love and care they need. Just me personally :)

Ok so I had to set my chicken eggs on the 8th. Was that too early...

Unfortunately that was too early for the totals to be included in the number set and number hatched contests.

Ok, bummer. My girls went into their molt and all stopped laying. I had to do something with the eggs I had and didn't want to let them sit for too long. :( Can I still play along?

What is a 'corned beef'? If I asked my butcher he would sell me a tin of squashed up shredded meat and fat made by Princes or something!

Haha noooo, no no no. Real corned beef roasts are divine! Yum.

Happy Chooks, sorry you lost a boy :( I don't like it when that happens.

Happy early St. Patricks Day!

Recipe for tomorrow- Crock Pot Corned Beef Brisket

1 Corned Beef Brisket
2 quarts chicken broth
6 fresh or dried bay leaves
Rainbow peppercorns

Place all ingredients in slow cooker, set to low. Enjoy in 24-36 hours. Serve with steamed vegetables, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, or bread. (Or all of the above).

This sounds really good and easy!

I have a corned beef in the frig, and everything else on hand but the bay leaves - any suggestions for a substitute? I guess I need to get this going like 2 hours ago!

ETA - NM, I found Bay Leaves, and they weren't even expired!

I'll let you know tomorrow how it turns out.

The number one cause of problems like that is temperatures too low or too high. The second is inadequate nutrition and the third is smooth bottom hatching trays.

Humidity too low is not a huge problem but the poultry industry would never incubate at 20%. They usually incubate at 55 to 60%. There are problems associated with too high of humidity though.

From what I researched on curled toes, toes curling out is not genetic. Toes curling in towards the foot can be genetic.

What I do for humidity is fill a tank or use a small food storage container to get humidity to 35 to 40% and then wait until humidity goes down to 25% and add more water. The surface area needed for the correct humidity changes by season though.

The thing to do is to get a Brinsea spot check and keep your temperature as close as possible to 99.5 or slightly higher. I like to set my temperature closer to 100.

Thanks so much. I think that helps. Will recheck my Thermo sensors and their positions and check out the the Brinsea Spotcheck. 35 to 40% is very close to what mine have been, so it is probably not the humidity, for this last hatch.at least. Too bad, because I don't have humidity control issues any more with my new Coolerbators. The one bent toe bent inward. I don't THINK the deformities are from nutritional deficiencies, since I often supplement with choline rich snacks, but I am very open to suggestions here. So I will take a hard look at the temperatures. Have never hatched on a smooth surface - I can't do those kinds of splits without hurting myself, either. Thank you again.

Okay, I know I'm late and I did post 35 eggs on Saturday night, but my neighbor came through with 3 eggs, and althogh I intended to swap them out, it just seemed a shame to throw out possibly the only other eggs that might hatch

so I put hers in and the 3 I was going to toss I sort of stuck between the others on the egg turner like I've seen others do. So I actually have 38 in my 'bator as of Sunday evening.

So my final batch of shipped eggs did not arrive today, so when it finally appears, it will be way too late to set for the HAL...
Was hoping to get in a few more, but alas, it's not to be...
Perhaps I'll eventually get them... *sigh* when the ship date keeps changing you know things will go downhill fast, but one of the many risks of shipped eggs.
I have plenty of chickens happily growing in my incubator though, so although I couldn't quite set ALL the eggs, I did get most of them in within the set windows!
Chicksplosion is coming!!
