Distressing news has reached us of a trauma with Contestant #3, Amber. During this morning's chicken chores, Amber was found frantically pacing and refusing to return to the nest. Upon closer inspection the nest was torn up and one of the eggs missing. The remaining eggs were scattered about and quite cold. They were rushed to Contestant #2's incubator for monitoring and closer inspection. Amber was allowed to range with the flock and scratch about to calm her nerves while the cause is searched for. We will bring you updates as more information becomes known.

do you have a place to put her and her eggs separate from the others?

Good luck guys! Check for rat poop. I had a problem last year with a rat messing up a nest box. Good thing I have a little dog that loves to "hunt" and doesn't give a cluck about the chickens! He went in and rooted out the problem for me without distressing the girls much.

So sorry to hear about the hatching upsets! 

I candled my one advanced egg I got a better light and can tell the difference looking. I took pictures but all the pictures are blurry.     I set the camera, my good expensive one, on a stable firm surface (I have no tripod yet) and took 15 pictures. Everyone was blurred.   

How does everyone else get such good pictures?

I usually just take a bunch of pictures, then delete all but the best ones.

Turn off the incubator and crack the lid for two hours.

Do not forget to turn it back on though!

If its the 9300 or 10300 I would check the temp every 15 mins.
Seems like days 15-21 the eggs start producing heat. (I may be crazy in that line of thinking). The temp really goes crazy then

Not sure what methods others use, but I've been using an LED climbing headlamp to do my candling (I use my finger between the lamp and the egg as a seal.) It helps quite a bit with the dark eggs, but it's still not perfect. Some of the ones I'm borderline about I'll still keep in the incubator but I mark them with an X and then re-check them a few days later. This seems to help catch all the viable chicks as best as possible. Good luck with your hatch!
