He really is a patient man. I guess 20 odd years together has taught him to just shake his head, maybe complain a little bit then laugh it off. Sometimes the laughing takes a couple days to happen but then he has a new "Janet" story to tell his friends, LOL. He thought I still only had one incubator.......I had to tell him about the 2nd(but smaller) one I built and then my DD told him about the one my mom bought me out of the blue. I think she didn't like the idea that I had eggs piled up on each other. So DH asked "where do you have them all?". I can't believe he didn't notice the two in the living room and the one in the laundry room! Two of them work with light bulbs and they flash on and off LOL.

Hi all! This is my first time incubating eggs. I have 7 in the incubator and they are looking good at candling! I am trying to figure out how to set up the brooder. Every article I can find says to have a heat lamp but when I went to the hardware store they had several different wattages. Do I want 75W or 120W?
Do you have a Tractor Supply Store or something equivalent? There you can buy a heat lamp with a ceramic light socket, most people will use a 250w red heat lamp bulb. Once you have your lamp set up over your brooder you need to be sure its not too close other wise your chicks will be to hot. Get yourself a thermometer to keep in the brooder, you want the temp to be 95degrees on one end of the brooder allowing the other end of the brooder to be slightly cooler so the chicks can get out of the heat if they need to. Then you need to raise the heat lamp each week just a few inches so the brooder temp with lower by 5 degrees each time until you reach the rooms ambient temperature which should take about 5-6weeks. then you can likely take the lamp away.

Where are you planning to place the brooder and how long do you plan to keep the chicks in their brooder? What is your weather like? It is so warm here we do not use a lamp for very long. They are expensive to run as well. Remember you will be adjusting the height of the lamp to help regulate the spot of warmth it creates for the chicks. Light just a spot, not the whole brooder as the chicks will move into and away from the warm spot as they feel the need for warmth. -DB

I have a 70W in mine. I just move it closer or move it farther away from the brooder top to regulate the temp. It works perfectly.

I haven't candled either, almost never do. Heck I haven't been able to check the incubator since Saturday morning when I put my back out. Might try climbing the stairs to the loft this afternoon. Starting to feel better, finally.
