The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

@mlm Mike set 13 on Sat (also a bunch of bantam eggs on Sunday but they already have some development from a broody hen so don't count)
They still count unless they have a lot of development, like a fully formed chick. We're counting any chicken eggs set from March 3 to 7th.

Quote: Or call the post office and have them hold them for pickup.

I set 18 silkie eggs on March 4. Does that count?
Yep!

Quote: And the Cinco de Mayo hatchalong too.

I set one egg under the broody today
@Happy Chooks
Awww, I hope it hatches! I always set at least a few under broodies, it makes me so sad when they sit all that time and don't get a baby!

I hope you will allow me to join along in the Easter hatch along ..

I set 10 Molten Houdan eggs in my incubator on the 5th of March

Welcome!

My little silver cot died. I had been carrying him in my shirt for the day and needed to get some sleep (I am sick). I went to lay him down in the bator and he wiggled out of my hand and fell 18 inches. He seemed all right so I tucked him back into his sock nest and went to bed. I got up 3 hours later and went to tape his curled feet and he was dead.

I have determined that we are all masochist at some level. Addicted to the drama of life and death. My peeping egg went silent so I don't know if it is going to hatch or not.
I'm so sorry!

That pattern is so cool, I wonder what genes cause that... heading off to the chicken color calculator to try and figure it out

It's mottling, like on an Ancona, Mottled Java, or Exchequer Leghorn.
It's those spotted legs that are unique for those Orust! Those freckled legs are something.

She already has some eggs that I set a couple days ago. One of my best hens layed an egg and I or it under her. I am going to finish the egg of in the bator since the other will hatch a little bit before. A friend is borrowing mine so I have to start it under the Broody.

I'm curious also. But I can't figure out that Calculator thing lol.
I started out learning the less complicated calculators (like the turkey and quail calculators) until they got boring, then started learning how to use the chicken one. It is still kinda confusing lol with all the variations but I love making different combos that look cool.

One of my favorite color chickens that I've found on here http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html is this:
E^R/E^R (birchen/crowwing)
Mh/Mh (mahogany/red)
choc/choc (chocolate)

Yeah I really want to find out what causes the spotting on the legs, unfortunately the color calculator is just feather color so I can't figure it out on there

I think it is a new gene because the leg scales are black and white too. I know of no other black and white chicken that has mixed colored leg scales. To me that makes it even more exciting.

I forgot I added more chicken and quail eggs update me

18 french copper maran
7 barninvelder
6 naked neck
5 tolbunt polish
20 coturnix quail eggs.

Total 55 eggs

Yes! The speckled legs are AWESOME! I really want some, but my mom just said yes to me possibly getting Svart Honas, (as well as CCLs, Chocolate Orps, BCMs and silver coturnix quail) so I don't want to push the limit on how many chickens I'm allowed to have

. Maybe next year I'll get some Orust...

I'll candle them again this evening and add the ones to my count that I can't see any veins in (some of them look to have at least 10 days development and some under 5 as the previous owner of my new broody, Chica, let the others keep laying eggs on top of her).

That's what those beautiful chocolate Seramas are I have been seeing.

Quote: They lay almost every day. I think they're my most consistent layers. They're certainly my friendliest hens. They're always under foot!
